24 hour news cycle. It's the information age, and it's not that anything is happening differently than it ever did; just that we now have the ability to know everything all the time.
My *opinion* is that the information (overload!) induces constant, low-level panic, which affects our worldview, which affects our values, which in turn influences the two primary conduits through which we get ALL of our information: gov't and for-profit media. Both of these institutions thrive... Sorry, I was being naive: Both of these institutions survive on this cyclical panic. SHARK ATTACKS, ROAD RAGE, THE SOCIALISTS ARE COMING, IS YOUR CHILD A VAMPIRE?, etc. Add to that the fact that we are now just a click away from learning about every disaster of any proportion, complete with first hand accounts, photos, videos, stats, graphs and you've got a recipe for panic and pessimism and despair; and worst of all the impression that the world is heading for ruin. I stopped listening to the gov't and the media once and was astonished to find the world is awesome.
