Why not reoil a K&N more often?

I have had a K&N oil filter on my car with good results and good UOA's. However, I tend to reoil them about every 10-15K instead of going longer. I know that there have been many people on this site that believe that a K&N will work better when slightly dirty, but it's really hard to tell when it might be too long.I look at it this way: To give an example, if I put a drop of syrup on my garage floor and then began to blow sand across it it would soon trap at the capacity of the syrup and then begin to let more and more sand go across. Is this example not the same as what the K&N oil is doing. (I know that the cotton gause is also filtering, but the oil is the key)so as long as you know how to clean and reoil the filter without over oiling it, why not clean it at a more reasonable interval. Wouldn't this help reduce silicon levels in UOA's?

but if you clean it too often it releases the dirt from the cotton gauze so dust particles smaller than the holes in the cotton gauze passes by.i'm not an expert but i think it's ok to oil it more often just not clean it until every 50k maybe depending on your conditions?

James,

Finally somebody YOUNG with an astute observation....My faith in the future is restored....

Yes, you can absolutely saturate a oiled cotton or foam air filter with dirt - particularly in off road use - in which case it your only protection is the coarse filter media itself.

James, you are speaking of surface area saturation. With a cotton guaze filter the "sand" needs to penetrate and pass the "syrup" if the sand was no longer sticking due to the sand on the syrup, it would simply be deflected, no?

Once you get to a certain filtration level, air wise, it almost has a non-existant effect on engine life. Your UOA's being normal is not odd at all, its the peoples who's UOA's that are not normal that is the odd ball. In normal on-road conditions, I dont think you would ever have to worry about re-oiling a K&N and can go the 50k-100k interval that K&N instructs.

I would love to have a test done with running an engine through the same environment, one with a paper filter and one with cotton guaze, or foam. I am so positive that upon physical measurments of the internals after say 200k there would be hardly any engine wear difference, if any, at all.

I re-oil the pod fiters on my motorcycle when the look dry and it helps keep the jetting in check.

Not clean then but just shoot a little oil on them. About once a year between cleanings.
