A lot of collectors and hobby oriented people find that their hobby has a price. Things must be paid for and stored. When a person loses interest, those things must be sold. If a person passes on, those same items need to be sold off by the executor of the estate. For some heirs, that process is not very convenient.

Motor oil and allied hobbies cost next to nothing. Most of them are constantly in use so unless one is very into the hobby, there is no huge collection of items to ever get rid of. Motor oil by its very nature circulates through the system. Its shelf life is defined by its usage. Besides this, the subject is interesting and evolves constantly. There are always new things to talk about.

I also should say that more than once, I have sold some to buddies of mine, or gave it free, if they had a need.

What is your take on this?

Very well said. Plus, it's practical because it does have a legitimate use and can be an investment if you have a stockpile purchased cheap and the price goes up.

And it is one of few hobbies that save you money, i.e., the more you know about oil and related topics the better you maintain your vehicle and the less you spend on repairs. Most hobbies can't say that (gardening, home maintenance, perhaps a few others save you money if done right.)

You mean WHEN the cost goes up!

Your argument sounds as good as any other as a reason to maintain a stash!

I like to keep things that I know I'm going to need and use purchased ahead of time so that when the time comes to use it, (like oil) I don't have to make special trip to find what I need. In the army I learned the "Six P's" which means: "Prior Planning Precludes Pi*s Poor Performance." It's planning and thinking ahead that can make life a bit less of a hassle.

Right on - we have one of the best hobbies!!

Unless your an old fool like me who has been collecting oil cans, both full and empty since 1962. I won't even begin to tell you what my wife thinks about it. The only thing she hates worse than that in my fountain pen collection
