Why is a Hellcat rear geared higher than my Grand Marquis?

For EPA MPG of course!!

I do notice, even from the 1960's factory rear gears are too tall for my liking. Even small trucks. I think the new GMC Canyon 4x4 is 3.42. Heck I regeared my Tacoma to 4.88. Yes apples to oranges, but I need low grunt....hahahaha
My Chrysler 300, with the v6, had a 2.62! I always wondered what it would have felt like with a 3.90…

I have 4.88s in my 4.0L cherokee on 35s. It works great for everything I need. As it sits right now, it's effectively lower geared than when it left the factory on stock tires. When I had 4.88s on 33s it was even more!

My worn out junkyard driveshafts start voicing their concerns around 60, though.

What’s the theoretical top speed with that hellcat setup?
199 was advertised for the Challengers. Never been there. Same as the automatics. Although Chargers were never offered with manuals, their top speed was said to be 3 mph more because of less drag.

M6 Hellcats have an incredibly long 1st gear. Redline is at 63 mph. I occasionally do a 1-6 shift.
Yep, the time I drove a Viper, it had the US speedo and I mistook the large mph numbers for kph. I was shifting at my normal rate(in my 4 banger) and still accelerating "moderately" at 80mph in 3rd, on a 50mph road, when I realized what was going on. That was impressive torque at all the rpms, but still quite a bit short of a hellcat!

What I meant was, redline, top gear, with that differential ratio and tire size.

Back when I had a turbocharged racing Miata, I removed the 4.10 gears and installed 3.63 gears. With the 6 speed transmission and my stand alone computer, I could redline the engine at 8,600+ RPM and reach 168MPH on Homestead track, bouncing off the rev limiter.

Gearset 1 is stock.
