Some Ford engines will have more sliding friction type components & require a higher HTHS than the typical 2.6 of a 5W-20.
Ford knew from the get-go that not all the Ford engine designs could handle 5W-20.
From a late 2000/early 2001 press release:
"The Ford Escape will be the first new model shipped with the new oil. All Ford 2001 model year vehicles - except the 4.0-liter Ford Explorer, 3.9-liter Lincoln LS and 3.3-liter Mercury Villager - will be shipped with the new oil as they go into production later this year. Eventually all new Ford vehicles will use the new oil."
They don't seem to be avialble any more, but at one time you could download manuals for different vehicles and different countries at the Ford site. You could see vehicles spec'd for 5w20 in the US and thicker oils elsewhere. Design aside, load and drain intervals are also a factor.
btw the 4.6L SOHC in my mustang takes 6 quarts, both according to the dipstick AND the owners manual. my 2000 Grand Marquis with a 4.6L SOHC takes 5.5qts.
most mustangs with a 4.6L take 6 quarts. ive seen a lot of DOHC 4.6's in cobras take 6.5-7 quarts.
