There's this one gas station in town called the Extra Mile Chevron that's been shut down for about a month. The prices on the sign have been fixed at $100 + 9/10 of a penny per gallon for all octanes. The station looks fine and clean; not run down or anything. It looks like it's ready for business at any time; someone just needs to open it.

Or it wasn't making a profit

tanks are a killer.

It was profitable - until tank replacement time.

Then it's so expensive because of all the laws and regulations the independent's fold.

They may have inadvertently put some Shell V power in their underground tanks and killed off the Techrolene colony. It takes months to years for the Techrolene colony to re-establish itself. You will see them pouring Rid-X in the tanks every month or so until they reopen for business.

It's not just the tanks but all the environmental remediation and removing and disposing of the soil which was contaminated by the leaking tanks. Part of the remediation could involve the drilling and monitoring of test wells to insure the plume isn't migrating (Decades ago I was an enviro tech and occasionally had to pull samples from test wells at gas stations)..

Before regulations, I remember a neighbor of a gas station lighting the ditch and calling the fire department. Ditch had leaking gasoline in it.

I also remember dad lighting the street (natural gas leak they would not fix)

They can get carried away with regulations, Stations have shown they can not be trusted though.

Yes I am old

That has been my impression , also .

Chevron dictates the profit per gallon the station can make if an independent franchise. I know ARCO usually allows from 3-11 cents a gallon for its franchisees.

New fancy Mobil built a big fancy "on the run" on a vacant corner lot in Hampstead , NH on the major commuter Route 111.

Seemed to do O.K . business. But station entrance was at a light around the corner from the highway. Bad traffic backup at that light BEFORE they built the station.

Went to get some gas there last week ...

It was an Irving!

That was a quick demise ...

Fuel sales are the loss leader for station owners.

Most of ours are 24 hour, some shut-down. Even right across from one another in a heavily traveled area...

The most local Shell to me (in Stockton, N.J.) took the owner 6 months to do a tank replacement, and a new updated (single) pump station!

I truly wonder WHY it took that long, and just how much coin he lost during that shut down.

Granted, some of that time was over the winter, but still.

My dad had 3 shell stations back in the 70's. I remember him saying"if you gan get the gas to pay the rent Your doing ok"
