Ok so why do people take advantage of people who may not know a whole lot about a particular subject? I'm not really that great when it comes to electronics. I pretty much learn everything I care to know about them and that's it. Personally I hate electronics. Anyways, the operating system on my computer crashed a few months ago and I had to pay to have someone to fix it cause doing a factory reset and safe mode and all that other stuff that normally fixes it didn't work and it was beyond my expertise. So I took it down to one of the major computer stores and they couldn't fix it either but they told me to go to another place and basically completely reinstalled the operating system and decked out my entire laptop and had it back to me the same day. This was on new years eve he did this so I was a happy camper. The guy was kind of shady cause he only wanted cash but seemed like a good guy. He basically gave me a set price and I acted unimpressed (I always seem unimpressed, works to my advantage when negotiating). lol Then he decided that sense I didn't have any of the microsoft office on my computer like word, excel etc. He would install it and also upgrade my computer to have windows 7 enterprise on it which I guess is almost the best. This is where he rips me off. About a month later I found out he put windows 7 professional on it instead of enterprise. Now this isn't really a big deal cause I only use the computer for basic stuff, but come on! Even if someone is clueless, eventually they'll figure out that you took advantage of them. So now do you think i'll recommend that guy to anyone else? Probably not. Too bad that people don't realize how quickly word of mouth can shutdown a business. Unless i'm wrong shouldn't it say windows 7 enterprise when I first turn on my computer instead of professional?

I have no idea what that guy did. He probably just downloaded it and put it on my computer. All I know is the computer works perfectly. It only had windows 7 home edition before so he did uprade it a little bit atleast. My main concern was just fixing the computer cause it was pretty much worthless the way it was. I paid the guy. I don't know if he took that money and paid for the software or what. I'm just kind of irritated that he pulled the wool over my eyes and didn't install windows enterprise like he said he would

I wouldn't be mad at the guy because you have Professional instead of Enterprise. There are only a few minute differences that most businesses can't even utilize. But as above; did he purchase you a new license? It sounds like he just made a copy.

Yes; it should, but if the machine is not in a domain or medium/large business environment, you are not really gaining anything by using Enterprise over Professional (BitLocker Encryption, Group Policy options, Direct Access, etc.) and there is the question of the license since I am almost certain you have to have a Select Agreement or other licensing with MS to have Enterprise. The question is--whose software did he load? Yours or his? Whose license key was used? I would want to be certain that I did not have a illegal copy of the software. I have seen way too many hacks load illegal software on a Dell computer (for example) since it does not require a license key to install the OEM version (it simply checks the BIOS to see if it is a Dell) and keeps loading. The hacks "charge" for an upgrade they do not legally own or are licensed to sell.

I agree with you there are too many out there simply skimming the unknowning...

If you don't know the diff. between Ent and Pro and you are happy with the way it runs....move on....nothing to see here.

One assumes you meant Windows 7 Ultimate. Win 7 enterprise is not for home computers and is only sold on a volume-license basis and would not be for sale from a computer support shop.

I'm with OVERKILL on this one, did you actually PAY for Windows 7 and get a license key/disks? If not, forget about it and be happy with Win Pro. It's probably what you should be running anyway, unless you want BitLocker or multi-language support. Win 7 Home -> Ultimate update would cost about $125-150 on it's own.

I'm happy with the computer. You guys are missing the point. The point is he could tell I wasn't well versed with computers and figured oh well i'll just instal windows 7 pro instead of windows 7 enterprise like he told me he was going to. All you do is run your business into the ground when people find out your dishonest.

I don't mean to argue, but in all honesty that guy probably doesn't think he ripped you off, and had no intention of being dishonest. Anything above Home Edition, is essentially the version for businesses. I myself have gotten the terms Professional and Enterprise confused before.

This sort of thing is all caveat emptor. A cash only computer repair biz run by "some guy" is going to come with compromises and you are taking a risk by using them. If you don't want the risk, you can stick to reputable businesses or buy a new computer, both of which will probably cost more.

I agree, it's wrong to take advantage of someone just because they aren't as well versed on the subject in question, but if you seek out "some guy" to fix your computer, that's the risk you take.

Is the program he installed better that the other?
As far as the word of mouth thing I see every day that a poor reputation doesn't mean you won't get work.
I see crews that I fired for poor workmanship still working in the various subdivisions, still building poorly.
Price matters to many, more so than quality of product. Some people believe that as long as it passes inspection then it's acceptable,I don't build like that. Building codes are the bare minimum requirement, and they don't even get into proper building techniques.
However there is always a customer who looks at price only, and they tend to get what they pay for.
Didn't this guy get this fixed on a holiday, and got it back to you promptly? Was the cost somehow unreasonable? What did he charge you? All that work it almost sounds like you may have been better off with a new computer, which by the sounds of it is almost what you got.
And you are now just posting about an issue from 3 months ago. Strange

Maybe that's part of the clueless part of the post comes in. The original post limits sounds like the guy did him a favour. Dunno man. Some people aren't ever satisfied.
Such is life. One mans upgrade is another mans scam I guess.

Unless you paid over $500 for the repair and have disks to prove it...

He committed multiple acts of piracy by installing unlicensed software (Office and Windows 7) so I'mnot sure I'd expect any honesty from him at all. And it may very well be his downfall when someone calls Microsoft's Piracy hotline or the BSA.

What's the receipt say? What, no receipt?

I could get a brand new laptop with Windows 8 on it for not much more than Microsoft wants for the license key to Windows 7........

And I thought they cracked down on using different keys on different computers.

What happened to the Activation Hotline?

And in every way it would be a downgrade. Win 8 (like all Windows OS's) is a horrible OS.

They did but I think it's after 3 or so uses you're forced to call in. But you can still call in and get it working. Had to do it with a copy of Office for my Mac when I went from old laptop to new laptop. Spoke with "Bob" a few times and it was fixed.
