Since submitting to the reign of the Supreme Commandress 7 years ago, she hasn't checked the oil a single time. Can't say that I ever expected her to- in my experience, mechanical ability (or interest, at least) is carried on the Y-chromosome.

I know that in the past, she has checked the oil on at least one vehicle- because she told me that her Blazer would stink and smoke under the hood whenever she added oil. I'm just thankful that I wasn't around for that one.

One time she agreed to change a tire in the driveway just so I'd be confident that she could do it. That was six years ago... still hasn't happened.

So what, you have a "kept woman" at home who absolutely could not make it in this world without your assistance? You've spent years enabling her to reach this incapacitated and disabled state? You don't let her go out with her friends and party on weekends. You don't let her go on trips without you. You don't let her do anything unless you intervene to make sure that she makes the best choice. You do allow her to work, because you feel you need the money. But you question her when she gets home so that you can figure out if she has ever thought about cheating on you. Every time she strikes up a casual conversation with another man, it privately cooks your goose.

Personally, I don't live my live that way, and I'm not about to start. My GF is an adult, got straight A's through college, and is perfectly capable of checking her own oil.

Let her learn her own lessons, and pay for them herself.

Not your prob Bob.

I am responsable for car maintenance in the family. Marina asks me to check the fluids on occasion. I am especially proud of her good automotive good sense since the time a few yrs ago when she called me from a KFC about 15miles away. She smelled antifreeze and saw steam. She had the good sense to pull into KFC and call me. All it was was a loose htr hose clamp. A short drive and a few minutes under the hood prevented a minor incident from snowballing into a major PITA

And when the money becomes 'both' of thiers, or in one pot, why should it have to be used to pay for her lack of attention to checking the oil? I for one do not want to shell out $$$$ that don't need to be spent just because my perfectly healthy I-Can-Do-Anything-a-Guy-Can-Do spouse/GF/Wife/whatever is too lazy or inept to check her own oil...

My live in girlfriend says you worry about your car and I will worry about mine. Im like fine, if something ever happens dont come to me.

For the record I do check her oil level quite often.

First You are going to want to send the filter off to dyson or blackstone for UOA and Filter. Take some oil for a sample since any metal that is out of place will show up in this oil since you did not drain or flush it....If you want to prove a case against Walmart make sure you have your reciepts for the rebuild and have a Toyota mechanic document rod and main bearing clearance, compression reading etc......Make sure they know you intend to use this as evidence in a Law Suite so they document everything properly. Seeing how this girlfriend is not very reliable with vechiles I wouldnot even consider rebuilding this engine until it absolutely needs it or you get a new girlfriend or give her a different car! The valvetrain and turbo charger are going to have suffered the most abnormal wear followed by the rod's then the oil pump and main's!

My guess as to why the engine didnt seize is because with 100k on a rebuild, its clearances are a bit wide. you may want to switch to a heavier grade of supertech

"Capable" and "willing" are two different things. But 'unwilling' yielded pretty much the same result as 'incapable' in your case.

My guess; there was enough oil to just barely keep things going but not enough to register on the pressure gauge.
I wouldn't expect another 100 miles out of that engine, but it might run OK for a while yet.
My 2¢

Would you not freak out a little if you realized the car you were in was cruising down the road with no oil in the crankcase? I think my behavior qualifies as an average reaction. You freak out, pull the car over, and put oil in it and try to figure out what the heck is going on because you know the car had the oil changed less than a month ago (and it is a car that never normally burns oil). Yeah okay, I grilled my GF for a few minutes about driving a car 200 miles with no oil pressure. But I'm pretty sure the rest of you hypocrites would have gone a lot further than I went down that road.

And as far a being ticked off, I think being ticked off at WalMart is an average reaction when someone you love takes their car there and it gets this kind of treatment that this car got. You should see the haphazard way the mileage sticker was slapped on the inside of the window. That alone would have 99% of the guys criticizing my behavior fuming mad. As far as being shocked, I would say I am not the only one who is shocked this car was able to run over 200 miles at freeway speeds with absolutely no oil in the crankcase and not burn up. As far as being confused, see the previous sentence. And I'm still confused as to why the engine still runs.

Edit: I thought I would add this and then drop the subject. Basically, I feel like there are some people nitpicking me here about my behavior way beyond what I nitpicked my GF's behavior. But it's all good.

JohnBrowning you are the man! Thank you so much for posting this info!

I had girl friends and now a wife that were not or are not vehicle friendly!!! I had one that could not start anyting wioth a carburator and cranked my 11:1 SBC motor for 30 minutes strait... I had dual battery's and a high torque mini Mitsubishi starter... It was 10 below 0 out and my batteries were boiling away like someone makeing mac and cheese on the stove....The starter was so hot that it gave me second degree burn's when I felt it....This same girl friend made a 300 mile trip with the oil filler cap off so when she got home 1/2 the oil that should have been in the engine was under the hood....She did the same thing with a an old Toyota Starlet....Never mind that both engines started fairly easy if you knew how to work a choke and could pump while cranking! Sure the chevy needed ether oncein a while on a cold day and you had to keep the RPM's up for the first few minutes of driveing but really they started easy....

I had one that seemed to think that oil did not need to be cheeked between anual oil changes at all!!! You can imagine how many times I found her car dangeriously low on oil!!!! I find that when ever I borrow a vechile from a realtive or friend I have to add oil....When ever I visit my inlaw's I know I have to check all the fluids on their vechiles and top them all off since they do not do this....Now that my father in law is in a wheel chair it is more important then ever in my mind!

When you get the UOA and stuff back please post it so we can see what happens to this engine when you run them dry!

now we know why Jiffy Lube and the others market target women and hire young nice looking guys that can sweet talk
it's not about the oil

ever see a girl in the drain hole at Jiffy Lube or doing the driver's window snow job?

If you want your wife to start caring about car maintenance, take all repair bills out of her spending money explaining if she had only checked the oil and water like you've showed her a hundred times, she would of had some good fun money this year instead of spending it all on a $3000 engine! Then get out the sleeping bag, your gonna need it.
