Why are you here?

Like daytime soaps, it's always good therapy to realize that you are not as crazy as some.

I am here because I have delt with cars for 40+ years and I remember what my Grandpa told me: "A wise man knows what he doesn't know".

The more I read the more I find out what I don't know.

Learning is pure joy!

I'm here because ever since I got my licence in December 1985, I've been obsessed with motor oil! I just always found it fascinating, and even before the internet came along I would try to research into the differences between all the major brands. Once I got online it made my obsession even stronger since there was even more info at my fingertips! I found this site back in the old days when Bob's message board was using a very basic design, not the current UBB software. Back then there were only about maybe 20 or 30 regular visitors. My how this site has grown!

Ich denke für mich, dass es sechs (6) ist und sechs (6) und auch sechs (6). Ja, das ist richtig.

Customer service, can we get a translator over here, please? I need some help with the Babelfishese.

1,4,3. Found the site while checking on the STP filter for my Ecotec. Major ripoff back in 02. got caught up in best filter for under $4 thread.

Amazed to find other weirdos chopped up filters.

6. First came here on a tip to look at the lenghty Rislone Engine Treatment VOA thread. Stopped a 25 year Rislone habit and have been having nothing but fun ever since.

I'm here based on my research of bypass filters and then I found a wealth of knowledge from the forum.
Mainly two, three and five.

We have all been here before.

I came here before the "here" was "here"....frankly didn't like the Bob, 24-7, pushing Schaefer's. (NOTHING against BOB - but this WAS a Schaefer's site). So I left....then I came back just to read and eventually registered, and then said what the hey, I can pay good money for this abuse!!

Now that the site is not nearly as partial I come here for the LOVE!!

But I am still suffering additive withdrawl symptoms. For example, I have on my oil shelf 2.3 bottles STP 6000 Mile Oil Extender (discontinued), 1 bottle Maxlife Engine Protector, and 0.5 bottle of Synpower Oil Treatment. And my oil mixing habitats are as bad as ever.

# 1,2 and 4 for me.

Found this site while searching for info on synthetic motor oil. The motivation was to keep my 1990 Acura with 177K miles going as long as possible to pass along to my 16 yr old son.

Learned a lot and planning to do AutoRx treatment when I do my next oil change

So far, the results to me have been surprising. I should have asked that you include the type of vehicle you are talking about, because sometimes (1) and (2) are dependant, and sometimes they can be mutually exclusive.

For example, in another thread, I presented mathematics, an economics lesson, that actually destroyed the 'myth' of 'cheap insurance', by showing that for what a person spends extra on overly frequent oil changes, they could actually buy a new engine, if not almost buy half a new car just on the discounted growth of the savings associated with extending drains. The issue there was, what would you rather have? a car that lasts to 300,000 miles and $10,000 in your pocket for a replacement, or a car that lasts to 400,000 miles and no $$$ for replacement? If the car is a Porsche, the extra 100k miles of engine life might be attractive as Porche's have huge replacement/overhaul costs, but if you are talking about a mid 90s Chevy, most would agree that money in pocket is a better deal.

So just to clarify, I am particularly interested in the difference between (1) and (2). Longer engine life will not necessarily yield overall lowest per mile ownership cost. Just trying to understand how many BiTOG'ers are cognizant of the difference, or even care about the difference.

Thanks all for participating. Keep the comments rollin.

1. I don't like doing or paying for repairs. I don't mind paying for DIY oil changes (especially when good oil has been on special for between $0.40-$0.55 on the dollar!)

2. I don't like trading in cars every 3 years.

3. Does not apply because I recycle my used oil.

4. Does not apply because like most here, I enjoy my time with my car.

5. My vehicles are not really high performance oriented, but I don't like lost efficiency though.

6. I enjoy learning at any level. Information and knowledge is VERY valuable.

Very True. That's why I like learning and consuming new information!

1, then 7.
When I started, I thought I could save money by knowing more about oils.
Then after some reading, I determined that for my uses, the best thing to do is probably to run Supertech for 7500 miles and get oil analysis once a year.
Now, I read it not to save money, but for amusement and pure education.

Gotta run with 1 and 3. Spending $50/6mo(Cdn)by changing the oil myself with good syn and filter is way more economical than a $40 trip to the Gyp-me-Lube every 2 1/2 months.

I kinda like 6 too, as my next run will be GC.

Cheers
