Buy whatever is the cheapest Alkaline batteries you can find and be happy is all I ever do. The "super heavy duty" [censored] [censored] zinc/iron/whatever dollar store batteries universally are garbage.

Any name brand battery/lithium/whatever usually universally costs way more then its worth to just grab a generic pack of Rayovacs and going nuts.

That or rechargeables; but in the AAA variety they lack capacity. D's and C's are hard to find and are often just AA batteries in "disguise" so they don't last.

I buy "varta" alkaline batteries at the hardware store, they are decent, and way cheaper than the usual suspects.

They also handle 2-3 goes in my "Rezap" battery charger, while duracells don't last a cycle.

If your torch takes 3 D Cells, you can pull apart a 6v square battery, and get 4 1.5V cells of approximately 1.5x D cell length. 3V does OK in a lot of torches.

As to recharging alkalines, I use them in our solar lights when the NiCd die, with great results. Put them in charged, and the recharge cycle doesn't worry them for months and months.

CR tested Alkaline batteries about a month ago, I don't remember which one is better/longer lasting.

The lowest price is usually at Costco or Sam's Club.

No Costcos here, & I refuse to pay Sam's money for the privelege of paying them more money!

Look for alkalines on sale. I watch the Sunday paper sale ads & local supermarket ads & buy alkalines only, usually Walgreen's house brand on sale. When they run sales Walgreens has good prices on AAA, AA, C, D, & 9V, & I find their house-brand alkalines to be very good batteries. OR: Sometimes Brookshire's puts the Panasonic alkalines on sale cheap($.59 to $.79 per 4-pak in AA & AAA) & I buy the limit(usually 4 pkgs) on those.

As far as paying the big $$ for big brands like Duracell or Energizer- nope, haven't done that for *Many* years.

**Note: Alkalines can have a very long shelf life. I'm still using Ray-O-Vac Alkaline D-cells I stocked up on in 2001 or 2002 when batteries, coleman fuel & lamp oil became available again after our big ice storm.

They don't last as long as new stock, but they last a lot longer than you might think. My big GE SuperRadio(6 Ds), the often used old Sony boom box(4 Ds), & my red 3 D-Cell Maglite(bulb, not led) still go for ages on 'em.

Panasonic or Ray-O-Vac alkalines at the dollar store, four or six for $1.

For my very low-draw LED flashlights, I have found the cheap AA's (usually 8 or 12 for $1) work just as well.

Do you have an IKEA store nearby? The alkaline batteries there are REALLY cheap (think $1.99 for a ten pack of AA) and they are as good as any other alkaline out there. I've had the name brands (Duracell and Energizer) leak, but the generic ones actually seem to do it less often. Strange.

I too have had good luck with the Ikea batteries, I noted in an old CD disk player, they once lasted much longer than the competition.

Perhaps it was a fluke.

It doesn't do the OP any good, but Menard's will have sales where you can get batteries for free after rebate. Of course, the rebate is a Menard's Credit Check, but if you shop there normally anyway, it's the same thing as free merchandise.

Our Dollar stores have gone from $1.00 to $1.00 and up. Batteries are pretty expensive around here. I found 20 ACDelco(Chinese made)AAA's at Big lots for $5 which seemed like a pretty good price. I'm still looking for cheap Alkaline D cells.

Do you have a Christmas Tree Shops around? I was in one of those in the fall for a trinket for a photo shoot, and saw their batteries were cheap. Dont know if it was a sale or because all their stuff is just cheap, but the prices were really good compared to the AAs that I had just bought at what I thought was a good price...

It's been my experience that any alkaline battery is relatively comparable to the next. If I can pick up Energizer or Duracell from Sam's at a good price, I will (they're the only ones I've seen made in the USA).

Barring that, I'll pick up AmazonBasics, Rayovac, or store brand ones.

Panasonic and Ray-O-Vac alkalines are US-made.

You must have found a decent source. Twice I've bought batteries from eBay, and wish I hadn't. They were chinese, inexpensive, and couldn't carry a charge for long.

I used to almost exclusively buy Rayovac alkaline batteries at Menards, until I had a Rayovac ruin a MagLite 3-D cell flashlight when it leaked. :^(

No more Rayovac for me... I'm using their in-house NorthTech batteries, and buy them when they're on sale.
