Who Makes The Best Suv For The Money ?

In Oz, with a Toyota Hilux running at $50k plus, the Chinese Great Wall is an amazing value for money vehicle...at around half the price of the Yota.

It's got safety comparable to 5-6 year old mainstream players, 30+MPG (US) in the diesels, and the new owners aren't afraid to throw them at the bush.

There are probably more SUV's than cars these days, how do you generalize and say which is best even for the $?

I am a big fan of the CR-V myself, but I also like several others.

4 wheel drive v6 good on gas reliable automatic.. Its for a 23 year old girl going to school.. Also good crash tests

In that case a nice Geo tracker, a 23 year old going to school definitely doesn't Need a new suv....

Anything from Subaru? Why a mid-sized SUV for someone starting out? I don't think that any SUV is going to get good MPG's for someone going to school. With 4 wheel drive & V6 your not going to get MPG's

If AWD and V6 is the only option then I'd maybe stick with a Hyundai Santa Fe or something. With AWD and the V6 it tops out at 26 MPG's hyw.

Completely agree on used...but not sure the Tracker had good crash test results...The Toyotas tend to be bullet-proof...mine sure has...

The Geo Tracker only got a 2 star crash rating. But of course most anything from that era's not going to get good crash test results.
Shoot if the OP's got the money to spend on his girl going to school, nothing wrong with giving her something new with a warranty and built safer.

It almost sounds like you're looking for the wrong type of car for the purpose.

Something like a used Highlander or older RX300 would fit the V6, reliable, and safety criteria.

After shopping this segment to death for a good friend we settled on a GMC Terrain.

Check out the GM offerings, they are surprising in person.

A slightly used Ford Explorer, Grand Cherokee or other vehicle that is rolling depreciation if v6 and 4wd a must.

If new and AWD okay Honda CRV is great/safe SUV. If she changes her mind(23) very high resale/easy resale unlike Kia/Hyundai/GM.

Older Pathfinder. Preferably a 3.3 one still made in Japan. Not too big. And young ladies love them.

We bought a 2012 RAV4 a couple months ago. I was lukewarm at first but the more I drive it, the more I like it. It's certainly not the most stylish vehicle but for our family of four it's very practical and a hoot to drive. I love the 3.5 V6.

I view this as...What is best suited for you/family, driving style and climate??? They're all quite reliable and all have their issues(although few).

I like the idea of a FWD 4 cyl and I am liking the GM offereings.
