Who makes the 80w90 gear oil GM dealers sell

Yes, it is Mobil.

You think $14 is bad for a bottle of conventional? Try $25-$30 for a bottle of synthetic! I can get 3 bottles of RP MaxGear for the same or even less vs 1 bottle of GM gear lube( synthetic ). When I had my Chevy trucks I always bought RP. $9 a bottle vs $25-$30 and a better product(IMO).

Here is another example of the outrageous mark up on stuff like that through a dealer. The GM pour in the tank FI cleaner is nothing but relabled Techron Plus. Available through any parts store for $9-$11( large bottle ). It was like $16 at the dealer when I asked. I always felt like a criminal when I sold stuff to customers when I worked dealer parts. I saw the dealer cost and then the price the customer paid and it sickened me. Dealer prices are NUTS!

Dealerships almost always charge insane prices for chemicals.

Anyway, the new GM synthetic gear oil has a grape scent for some reason. That might part of a special additive package... Or to help out the new mechanics that can't handle the smell of regular gear oil.

I know that the 2 GM dealers, the Ford Dealer and the Chrysler dealers in my area buy most of their lubricants from local distributors, the lowest price supplier gets the sales. They are under no obligation to use GM lubes even under warranty. AS long as the lube meets spec's, its ok to use.

Friend is a driver for local QS dist, he supplies the Ford dealer and they buy all Ford trucks. One GM dealer use nothing but Marathon (who buy vehicle from him), the other some unknown bulk lube supplier that set him up with a system and takes away all the used oil and filter. The Chrysler dealer was using QS last I knew.

Its to distinguish it from non-synthetic.

I know for a fact that if you have your vehicle serviced at this one GM dealer in town and it requires synthetic, you have been getting Amsoil for the last 5-10 yrs or so. Cost the dealer to much to stock GM chemicals because they have to buy in minimum quantities. I thought he told me min order was $2500 and that's because of the hazardous properties require special handling. Also any lubes in bulk containers had to have special areas setup to contain spills and procedures in place to mitigate any spills from entering any shop floor drains etc.

I "believe" the OP was referring to the bottled GM product not the bulk fluids used at the dealer. I may be wrong though. My post was in referrence to the GM bottled stuff through the parts dept.

why does G M charge 14.00 for 1 qt?

Dealer overhead. Strict adjerence to 'suggested retail' pricing.

Price part A at the dealer.
Price part A at an ACDelco shop.

Part will come from the same warehouse (in my case, Woodstock ON), come to town on the same truck. Difference can be greater than 50% in parts cost. Of course, dealers whined about this and many more parts are becoming "Dealer only" parts if you try to order them from your neighbourhood ACD dealer.

I saw the exact same thing when I worked parts at the Ford dealer. Ford parts were about 2-3 times more expensive than Motorcraft parts. If we bought too many MTC parts, and not enough Ford, Ford whined and raised a stink with our warranty submissions.

GM doesn't make lubricants therefore no UAW to pay. They buy lubricants from different suppliers, such as Mobil.

btw just throwing something out there, if i take my car to a dealer, i expect OEM parts to be used, ie i expect motorcraft fluids used in my Ford, Volvo used in my Volvo. if i wanted to use non OEM fluids or parts, then i would go to an independent.

btw at the dealer i work at, we use Motorcraft fluids only. we also have mazda and carry mazda fluids as well. we use motorcraft filters and OEM mazda filters. we will use motorcraft parts on mazdas that are identical to fords, we usually bill out the mazda part number and make the inventory correction on our end.
