Hello,

I got a 2010 Mazda 3. I will be buying a new air filter for it as an extra spare but I want to know who makes the oem filter? The oem is about double the cost of an aftermarket.

Im guessing the same company makes the cabin filter.

There's no reason to presume that. It could be the same company or it may not be.

I buy Toyota OEM (engine) air filters for my wife's car and they have DENSO as well as Japanese lettering printed right on them, so no one tries to hide anything.
Note also that OEMs often use different factories and quality for the aftermarket versus OEM car manufacturer. Not always...sometimes they are identical other than the box they come in. But in the past five years, I am seeing a lot of stuff made in a different country and with sketchy quality too. Run across this a bunch with BMW parts suppliers.

But even Denso I notice different factories used, though the quality remains the same. For my Tundra and oem Denso air filter from Toyota is made in the USA, but in the aftermarket Denso box, it is made in Thailand. Quality appears comparable though, which is good.

But for BMW, most of the oems still make stuff in Germany or somewhere in Europe...but for their aftermarket sales it is made in eastern europe or China and I have had a lot of issues. It used to be always the same, just different box...no more. Seems the Japanese are starting to do the same.

The Mazda air filter could be a Ford product.
I own a 2008 Mazda3 - which at that times shared many parts with the Ford Focus - I believe jointly developed. So when I picked up a air filter from the Mazda dealership, I believe someone mentioned that you could get the same product from the Ford dealership for cheaper price. Though it's likely harder to get equivalent part #, but I may not be surprised if the air filter here in US comes from Ford or Ford supplier.
I also suspect that the Denso manufactured air filter for the Toyota dealership and the Denso aftermarket product line are not similar or of the same quality. The product at the dealership is most likely manufactured to a higher OEM specification requirement than the aftermarket line (even though both a Denso product).
Now I just prefer to get OEM version only. It's only needed every 2-3 yrs - so worth the extra cost for peace of mind reg perfect "fit"
