White under oil cap

This morning I checked the oil in my 2006 mercury. It is about 3k through a 4k oil change. I looked under the oil cap and there is a little bit of a white film under the cap and a little but around the fill neck. Ther oil on the dip stick is clear and clean and the coolant tank is where it always has been. It has gotten very cold here the past few weeks, so could this just be condensation? I know that it does happen in the winter months. The first thing that came to my mind is a head gasket.

Probably just condensation. Take it for a 40 mile drive and see if it goes away. Happens to me every winter. Drove 40 miles over the weekend on Saturday and mine went away.

Condensation. The oil cap is the highest part of the engine internally, so the water collects there.

The milkshake oil cap from oil condensation is very common on the mod motors from what I've heard - I looked into it when it started to happen on the F350. Our 5.4 F350 doesn't get driven much and when it does, it always does this the first part of the trip. Usually once it's up to temperature and driven hard, it won't do it for a few months.

As long as it's just a light film and not thick and gooey, it's probably just condensation. If it's not losing coolant and the white slime goes away after a longer run, it's nothing to worry about.

As others have said, it's probably condensation and nothing to worry about; check your oil to make sure.

An Italian tune-up will cure that in quick order.
