Which vehicle year is safe from EMP attacks?

Some talk show host must have been rambling about the possibility of an EMP because someone was asking me about this yesterday...

Probably after China cyberattacking google we all started thinking about our electronic infrastructure. Next sars/swine/bird flu?

Might be better to get a modern 4x4 you actually would use day to day and then get spares of all the critical engine electronics which you could store in some sort of faraday box?

I did read some articles about EMP and it is pretty scary what a couple nukes could do. Very unlikely though.

An early Dodge Cummins diesel pickup with a manual trans up to and including the early 91 model year literally does not need any electricity at all to start and run if you disable the shutdown solenoid and clutch switch and park it on a hill for bump starting purposes.

It will be like after the lightning storms on War of the Worlds (2005 one) when all of the cars are disabled on the highway!

This thread makes me happy for some reason

. What ever you do don't get a vehicle with Onstar, or at least disable it. They don't even need EMP to shut you down

GPS will be useless either by enemy action or internal shutdowns. Onstar runs on cellphone towers that will be horrendously overloaded and their backup batteries will die in a day or so. If they survive the EMP, doubtful, an enemy would prefer the confusion of interrupting communications.

I think that we would be so screwed of there were an attack of this nature. Everyone is SO dependent on their phones and other communication devices to get through their day. I think they all would be lost if these devices were suddenly no longer available.

A horse and buggy would likely be the most effective method of travel immediately following an EMP attack. I hope it never, ever happens, but it would be interesting to see which vehicles survived after an EMP attack. I'm guessing there would be quite a few old pickup trucks and tractors that would survive. Maybe some older motorcycles and ATVs as well???

At least I can ride long distances on my bike, if the need should ever arise (before I'm old).

Trust me, it won't be interesting to experience an EMP attack.

I certainly believe that a direct nuke attack is unlikely because it would definitely equate to counter attack. However, a nuke going off outside our atmosphere will be much harder to predict its origin and will cripple our communication system to counter any attack.

Without transportation, trucks won't be able to deliver food and supplies to stores and there will be a mad max society. Most electronic will be destroyed and spare parts will be fried as well. I like to not have to be victim if that occurs. Since the last time they made a car without electronic ignition and fuel was before I was even born, I am somewhat clueless about it. I am looking for a date and vehicle type. For example, I know 60s trucks would be fine but it is harder to get one in good condition for a decent price and even harder to find parts for than something in the 80s, which may or may not survived EMP attacks.

Since folks here know a lot more about cars than I do, I figure I asked. However, the brain trust seems to be leaking and I wonder if 5W20 vs. 5W30 is the only topic people actually read about.

Do you have your foil hat ready?

Dude, seriously, much as I understand that what you say is a real possibilty, if you're actually going to start prepping for this, you might want to see a doctor, or reduce your stress level.

If the grid going down in August 6 years ago was any indication of what it might be like...I recommend you get a Schwinn OR an old Honda 50 (and a siphon pump) that gets 100mpg because all the gas pumps will be immobilized as well.

Don't forget the nuclear winters...

Otherwise, I'd be looking for something like this...

Truthfully, though, after an EMP you wouldn't get very far in anything unless you're in the countryside. Cities will be full of unrest and riots after a couple of weeks, with massive movement outwards.

Rebuilding will be long and painful road for all. Vehicles would be cobbled together from usable parts. and look pretty funny before long.

I don't think that western civilisation would get a chance to rebuild.

Food stocks are lower than ever, with excess grain turned into ethanol, and farming requires more energy than makes it to the table...even the biggest grain farmer in the country probably buys bread at the supermarket.

If you could somehow mobilise everybody from the city out to the country, and somehow get them to manually work the land, you'd still run out of food before the next crop.

And human nature being what it is, there's be no livestock to breed next season, as it would be consumed here and now.

My personal take is you don't want to be tied down to a set location and plan. Those who will survive will be both lucky and adaptable. Best bet is to get as far away from other people as possible. Have a large enough sailboat ready to head offshore, stocked with plenty of water and food. A decent boat should be able to carry three months of supplies or so--plenty of time to get to wherever there isn't war. A lot of sailboats have simple diesels with no electronics. Some can even be crank started in an emergency. You can sail as long as there is wind. It is easy to make them energy self-sufficient with solar panels and wind generators, even if the control boxes don't survive. You can navigate with a sextant and tables, paper charts, a compass, etc. though it would be tougher without accurate time, but still doable.

Can I request a targeted Davey Crocket EMP attack directly over my house? Wipe out every I-pod, cellphone, TV, Wii, PS/2, and PC. That way I can have a decent and non-competing conversation with my 2 teenagers and wife. Thanks. And my electric bill thanks you too.

Yea, this is looking at the glass half-full...Good riddance, even with the PC gone...force us all to do something truly useful, as compared to entertaining...
