Panasonic has been around in the US longer than JVC. JVC stands for Japanese Vending Company, and I had always wondered *** ? They build their products based on lowest bidder or something? Panasonic has also had their hand in all kinds of cookie jars.....stereo's, musical gear, TV's, car audio, etc. etc.
I don't know about the JVC TV, but the lighted remote with the Panasonic is sweet. You'll enjoy that when lights are off. Also, the JVC rated only 7.5 watts for speaker amps, that's not a lot of volume, so you won't have very much bass, if any at all. Just for grins, scan the Sony TV's. You may pay more, but oh my god....they are loaded and killer sound to boot. If your just in the market for a 27 inch, Sam's had one for about 160 bucks, don't remember the name.
Also, check out Amazon.com or do a complete internet search. But know this....there are only 3 TV plants in the world, so I was told...someone correct me if I'm wrong. Tube wise, you may just have the same tubes in both TV's, just the "guts" are different.

Where is Buies Creek NC? I was born and partially raised in Fayetteville.

Schmoe,

I don't recall where I read it (probably on one of JVC catalogs), but I thought JVC stands for "J. Victor Company" of Japan.

about the sound: Consumer reports rated the sound of JVC 5/5 and Panasonic 4/5...I did notice that Pana had more watts per speaker;
However, it won't matter much 'cause I'm planning to connect the analog audio-out from the TV to my Onkyo Mini system, which has great sound.

Buies Creek is about 3-4 miles from Lillington, on HW 421.

Used to be a (National) Panasonic user for years TVs, VCRs, CD player etc. But changed when i needed to JVC, TV ,CD player i reckon there got the edge on Panasonic design etc, really probaly not much in it but i would go with JVC. Yes i would buy JVC 10/10 before Panasonic 9/10.

JVC does not stand for Japan Vending Company. It stands for "Japan Victor Company". It has been around for a long time, and marketing products in the USA for at least 30 years.

JVC has strength in product and technology development, Panasonic has strength in marketing. The VHS videocassette recorder was developed by JVC, and all firms that manufactured these VHS recorders had to license the technology from JVC.

Other than picture quality, features, etc., it may boil down to where you can get the unit repaired if you need to. However, these days, TV repair shops seldom want to come to the home to do a repair, and the sets are so cheap, they have become a throw away item.

If it were me, I would get the JVC. I think you usually get a little more bang for the buck with JVC, as it is a brand that is less recognized by the average USA consumer.

We have a JVC 27 inch TV, bought in 1989, good picture, still going strong. Have not owned a Panasonic TV.

I have bought a couple of items from Etronics at their retail store here in Manhattan, all were fine.

RE Sony, we have a new Sony 34 inch wide HDTV. Fabulous picture. Speakers are also very good. Just got a new Sony 24 inch regular TV for my mother in law, it looks very good. If you do some research, think you'll find that Sony is considered to be a high quality TV manufacturer.

You might consider an HDTV...prices on the 26-27 inch models have come down a lot, and the picture is such a step up.
