which oil, tired 4.0 OHV ranger

Ok so over the last few months there have been 4 used motors swapped into my 2000 ranger under warantee. I don't know the mileage on any of them but the current one is the only one that made it past two weeks. Its running good and feels powerful. The only thing I don't like is that its a little noisier than the origial one with 139k was. After idling for about a minute on a cold start(15 degrees on avg.) piston slap becomes hearable. I'm almost positive its piston slap because others on ranger boards have commented on it and they all say if it sounds simliar to a diesel its piston slap and thats how it sounds. The top end seems somewhat quiet, most noise seems to be coming from the pistons though. Right after I got the truck back I used seafoam through vacuum lines and also half a bottle through the oil and ran it for 400 miles, the oil came out VERY dark, darker than I've ever seen. Then I put in Pennzoil 5w30 non synthetic with a purolater filter. I picked up some Q Torque 5w30 full synthetic yesterday hoping it might help quiet it down. Any thoughts, should I switch to 0w40 or rotella 5w40(expensive)?

and they say the piston slap won't harm anything so no points in rebuilding or new rings

I need to ask you what kind of warranty uses "used" engines? I mean, remanufactured ..sure..but no matter

Given the onset of the sound, I'd say it's viscosity related ..but let's see how the thread develops here.

Uck, I can't imagine having to have 4 engines, I'd have to slit my wrists or something.

Probly one from an "Auto Recycler". I got a 318 Dodge one time for a customers van. They said that they checked the compression and ran it. Got it back to the shop and had to swap the oil pans. Got the oil pan off and saw the broken rod.

the warantee is through the used engine supplier, and it also covered labor, the piston slap goes away after the temp needle has budged, so maybe 5-10 minutes after starting, and it doesn't start the noise until a minute after starting. Wierd I know.

Common in the Ford 4.0 pushrod engine. My son bought a used 98 Mazda with same engine...sounded really good for 150,000 mile truck. I changed the oil and freaked..on startup motor was making noise like crazy. Searched and found this is common piston slap with this engine. Old thick oil quiets it down, new oil slaps bad until warmed up.

I had a 96 ranger with same symptons,was tlod from ford that it was CARBON KNOCK...try a good quailty fuel injector cleaner (chevron-techron) and see what happens.

My father in law has a 97 with nearly 180,000 on the clock maintained by me. I always used Chevron, Havoline and now Pennzoil in 5w30. One auto-rx rinse and clean cycle. No engine knock and the motor really sound great for the miles and age. You may just have to experiment with different things and see what works best for your rig in your applications and climate.

Personally, I'd lean to heavier weights. I'd work my way up the weight scale. 10w30, 10w40 15w40 and see how it behaves.

I have a friend who runs Valvoline 10w40 in his 4.0 year round.
He told me if he runs anything else he gets the knocks..
