I just purchased a beautiful Ford Thunderbird Tudor Hardtop from 1969.
Now I´m about to change engine and transmission fluids and other parts that need maintenance from time to time.
I´m not sure what to fill in the C6 transmission. I already read something about Type F. Or should I use Dexron III or IV or V or even VI?
E.g. my Grand Cherokee calls for ATF+4 and won´t forgive if I use something different.

I would stick with type F, especially if this is a never-rebuilt and un-modified Ford transmission. More heavily friction-modified fluids will decrease the low-sliding-speed coefficient of friction relative to type F, resulting in higher energy dissipation in the clutch packs before they finally hold and stop dissipating energy. Over the short term and in light usage, the transmission would probably survive (especially being a C6 and not a C4...), and honestly you would probably think it 'feels' like its shifting better... but its not the way it was designed to operate. Using ATF+4 would be even worse, since it further reduces the low-speed sliding coefficient of friction to combat torque convertor clutch shatter in Chrysler electronically-controlled transmissions.

Dexron VI is "better" in most objective measures (oxidation rate, shear stability, volatility, etc.) but unfortunately the friction profile just isn't quite right for the older Ford automatics.

Use F, was all any Ford trans used until the AOD was introduced in '80...

Speaking of AOD I have one with only a shift kit and hardened input shaft(otherwise stock)... I used only F in it for nine years and over 700 drag strip passes(some with 150Hp hit of nitrous)... It had around 40K mi when I bought it, added approx same, still shifts great...

that's not quite right.

in 1977 the c6 was spec'd for ESP-M2C138CJ or Dexron II, which was later superseded by Mercon. C4 still spec'd Type F (ESW-M2C33-F Type F)

Pre 77 C6 should be spec'd for Type F.

unless it has been rebuilt, in which case, it is anybody's guess and your chances are about 50/50

Your torque converter will also have a drain plug.
Using a breaker bar/long ratchet with a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt, turn the engine until the plug is on the bottom of the torque converter and drain it. You'll get several extra quarts of oil out of it.

Thanks a lot for all you responses. So Type F will be what I will fill in there.
How much will it need with and without torque converter?
