I want to keep my 2006 Jeep for a very long time.At least 100-150K.I drive mostly highway.About 300-400 miles a week.Would it pay to use conventional oil and change it 3,000 miles(Castrol/Mobil) or use synthetic oil(Mobil-1) and change it every 6,000 miles. My concerns are varnish and keeping the inside of the engine clean.I need info please. Thanks Joe

I would tell you to use conventional and go with your 3k intervals. 3k mile intervals would be very, very safe.

Highway miles are easy on oil.....Most any dino and good filter will get you 5000 mile OCI's easy....Synthetics triple that...so lets say 15K of highway miles for synthetics.....so the math will tell you what is the best return on investment....
Cost of oil and filter/miles=cost per mile.
Example....
Dino
Castrol/Pennzoil/Mobil/Havoline whatever
$2.00 per quart X 5 quarts=$10 bucks
Pure One Filter $2.00 bucks
Total= $10 bucks/5000 miles = .002 per mile as in
$2.00 bucks every 1000 miles......

Synthetic
Amsoil/Royal Purple/Red Line whatever
$6.00 bucks per quart X 6 quarts= $36 bucks
3 Pure One filters @ $2 bucks per filter=$6 bucks ( change filter every 5000 miles and top off...I added a quart of oil for this exercise for top off during the OCI)
Total $42 bucks/15000 miles = .0028 or $2.80 per 1000 miles.....
You may throw in your time to change if you wish and put your own monetary value on that....but my rule is you need to be "looking" and inspecting your car at the minimum of every 5000 miles anyway...all fluid levels/tire pressure/belts/air filter etc. etc. IMHO todays dino's are robust and have the add packs to handle 5000 OCI's and give you great performance and tip top shiny clean engine parts for more than your goal of 150K.....
My big disclaimer here is of course your driving habits/geographical specifics ( hills/mountains/desert etc) climate what have you.....if your harder on your car due the caveats I mention...then a semi-synthetic or full synthetic or shorter dino OCI's would be in order....me.....I would email Blackstone or Terry Dyson and get some sample bottles for UOA's and that my friend will allow you to not only utilize the math of economics but the wear metals to focus you on your sweet spot for your oil/filter/OCI setup.

Whatever you do, until you are out of warranty use your manual's reccomended grade of oil for your manual's reccomended oil change interval and save all receipts.
If the vehicle specifies a particular motor oil spec, make sure the oil you buy meets that spec, just for warranty's sake.

You'll get better reccomendations if you specify the model of Jeep you own and the specific engine within.

I'd go with Havoline 5w-20 if your jeep calls for a 5w-20. You can get it for ~1.75 a qt at Sam's.
Strong tbn, lots of moly, I run it in all my cars...they all love it.

good luck.

It all depends on whether you like changing oil or not. Myself, I love changing oil. I change mine at 3 month intervals regardless of milelage with a high quality dino. The inside of the motor stays extremely clean.

On my next change I'm thinking about switching to German Castrol. If I did that, I would have to force myself to go further than 3 months. I'm sure the GC would make it; however, I would be an emotional wreck.

Two thoughts come to mind. Not sure which Jeep or engine you have? If you're referring to the LIE (Long Island Expressway for those who don't know) I wouldn't call that highway driving - most of the time!

I just posted on another thread regarding Jeep engines and issues. I am beginning to think you are safer if you use synthetic in the newer engines that run at very high temps to meet the latest emission requirements. Sludge has become a big problem for many manufacturers and the best way to avoid it is the use of synthetics. JMHO

My Jeep is the 5.7 liter Hemi.I could I think use Syntec for 3,000 mile OCI.I must use 5W20 for the MDS system.I thinking of using Mobil Clean 5000 or Castrol GTX.I understand that BMW recommends Castrol for their cars.Joe

Between those two, I'd use the GTX! Esp if your manual says to use 5w-20 and 3000 mile Oil changes.

Take care, Bill

PS: What type of MPG are you seeing with the 5.7? Just wondering...

The LIE is also known as the 'worlds longest parking lot'.

If I were changing at 3K and using 5w20 I'd use dino oil and most likely Exxon Superflo which is the least expensive, high quality dino 5w20 in my area. Pennzoil dino and MC blend (now available in 5qt. jugs at WM for under $9.00) would also get some consideration.

With that awesome engine, I wouldn't hesitate to use Mobil 1 5W-20 as it meets lastest Chrysler spec.

I believe Amsoil do as well.

Attention, Moderator!!

Please remove my first response to original poster's question. Evidently a system problem occured during edit procedure.

I have a '99 Corolla which currently has 71k miles. I use Havoline 5-30 dino with 6K OCI. The engine runs perfectly smooth, and the oil is just starting to darken at 6K. I see no reason to change anything I'm doing and I plan to easily be able to get 200K from this motor. I'd expect you could expect the same.

Another option is to buy a large order of Shaeffers 7000 and run 5k changes (you could probably go longer on it with some confirming UOAs).

That's what I'm now running in everything but my R. At just over $3/qt, Schaeffers delivers UOAs as good as M1 (excepting high stress turbo apps where a full syn is recommended) at a fraction of the price.

Of course, be mindful of the warranty interval.
