Which manual trans fluid 1992 Toyota?

Just bought a 1992 Toyota Pickup 2wd with a five speed manual transmission. From a manual I found online, it said GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 was OK. After looking around the net, it seems that a lot of guys like to use a GL-4 only. Locally, I can get Sta Lube 85W-90 GL-4 from NAPA. I have already bought some SuperTech 75W-90 syn blend that is GL-5 and MT-1 rated that I was going to use in the manual trans. I can return it, so it's no big deal.

Let me know what you guys think please. I don't want to go over the top, and spend too much money on the fluid.
 
I find it hard to beat Redline MT90 as purchased on Amazon.

As for my experience GL5 rated gear oil seems to have worse shift quality than any GL4 in the manual transmissions I have experience with. These are a handful of rx7's and a 95 Mazda Protege. A switch back to cheap GL4 almost clears away notchiness felt with GL5 oils in place. However if GL5 is run long enough it seems to cause permanent damage as experienced in my current RX7. I ended up switching to MT90 and this has helped quite a bit. Cheap GL4 helped some but I still had notch going into 3rd. Now I have mine resistance going into 2nd but almost no more notch except on really cold mornings. Amsoil 75w90 GL4 or any other high grade GL4 would probably help just as much!
 
I agree with the Redline or Amsoil GL-4 suggestions.

It's disappointing that so few GL-4 MT fluids are available when so many vehicles reqire them.....I wonder why?
 
I said to heck with it, and just went to NAPA, and bought a gallon of Sta-Lube 85W-90 GL-4 for $24.99. It does not get too cold here in NC, so I think it should work OK.
 
Not super cheap but I also exclusively run MT90 in my Toyota transmissions. The GL-5 lubes shift like dog pooooo in these transmissions. I run the MT90 for 50K with no issues and I probably change it too often. No issues as I approach 330,000 miles on the original transmission in my 1987 4Runner.

Now GL-4 does not necessarily refer to MTF’s, as there are some gear lubes in the

Amsoil MTG and Redline MT-90 75W90 and Redline MT-85 75W85 (colder weather) fluids work well in an MT speced for this viscosity.

That is probably because so few manual transmissions are sold in the USA. If you look at the European divisions of certain oil companies, you will find a variety of GL-4 lubes since there are so many manual transmissions over there.
 
Drained and filled the trans with Sta-Lube GL-4, and I changed the shifter bushings too. It's shifting like a new truck would. Could not believe the difference it made, but I will have to say that the shifter bushings made the biggest difference.

There are two shifter bushings the seat bushing, and the bushing that goes onto the end of the shifter. The shifter end bushing was completely gone, and the shifter seat bushing was basically a few left over chewed up pieces. The oil seal that use to be attached to the shifter bushing was still doing it's job.
