Hi guys! i'm new here, i'm writing from Italy (so please forgive me for my terrible english :D) and i'd need your precious help.
Here is my question: first of all i don't use often the car (look at my signature), so sometime it remains in my garage for 3-4 consecutive weeks without being used at all; moreover it's LPG powered so the temperature in the combustion chamber is higher than normal; eventually, i never use my beloved car for short trips as i usually drive it on the highway.
One more information about the temperatures: in winter i go with this car to the mountain (-20°C/-4°F) and where i live in summer temperatures can reach 35 to 40°C (95 to 104°F).
Now, knowing how i use the car, and knowing that i never drive more than 5300 miles (8500 kms) between two oil changes, which oil would you suggest me?
Required specs are VW 502.00 (or VW 503.01, even if this one would be for long life services).
I thought of using Mobil1 0W40 "Protection Formula", but I've heard discordant opinion about this oil: someone says it's the best oil in the world, someone else says it's the worst; in addition to this i've read that it causes the engine to be noisy when it's cold, is it true? Because i'm really confused about this oil.
An alternative to M1 could be Castrol Edge Sport 0W40, has anyone had experiences with this product?
Otherwise, which oil would you suggest me?
Looking forward to getting your opinions and suggestions, i thank you very much!
Bye!

Alvise

PS. I don't know if it's relevant, but the car has about 71'000 miles on the clock.

I see nothing wrong with M1 0W-40.

Almost forgot:

Try either one. Both are excellent oils. Or do one change with Mobil 1 and the next with Castrol. Then decide for yourself. But neither oil is going to hurt that engine.

We do not have Castrol Edge Sport 0W40 in the USA, therefore I don't think anyone in USA can give you any opinion about it.

Mobil1 0W40 is recommended by Mercedes, specially it is recommended for AMG engines and Porsche engines too, therefore it is a very good oil for your engine. Another good oil is Castrol Syntec 0W30.

Great! Thanks to all of you. As I can read you really appreciate M1, that's comforting to me.
@ HTSS_TR: i think Castrol Syntec 0W30 is GC, right? Because even if it seems absurd, GC isn't sold here in Italy.

Anyway, reading some topics on this forum i've noticed you often take account of an oil i didn't know at all, as it's sold really nowhere here in Italy (even if an official importer for Italy exists): RedLine; so i visited their website and (obviously) in their description it seems to be a fantastic product...can I ask you what do you think about it? may it be a good oil for my engine (i've noticed that this product has no VW approvals)? Because a very very interesting feature to me was the use of exclusively group V base stock, and this would be really useful in my car because, as esters are polar molecules, they binds with metals creating a protective film that lasts even if the car is not used for a long time. (Please correct me if i'm wrong)
Hoping not to having bored you, i thank you again!

Is Agip available? I have heard great things about Agip Techsint oil. I have friends here in the USA from Europe, and all are disappointed about not getting the "good" Agip here. IIRC the Agip Techsint SL 5w-40 is VW 502.00 approved.

To be sincere i was looking for a 0W40 oil because of the different situations in which i use the car; i think i'll try using M1. But if i had any kind of problem, is there a group V 0W40 oil i could use (i.e. RedLine)?
Thanks! bye!

Yeah, RedLine 0w-40 or 5w-40 would work, although none of these carry the official VW spec approvals.

Don't be overly concerned with the 30-weight... it's just a range. GC 0w30 is at the upper range of it - it is almost a 40-weight. And an oil like M1 0w-40 will quickly shear down to a high 30-grade in your engine anyways.

True, but i think the absence of VW spec approvals in RedLine products is merely commercial; and as i've never used ester based oil i'm a bit curious..

Most likely. The HT/HS is certainly high enough by VW standards.

Exactly! it's probably the 0W40 oil with the highest HTHS (i've seen no other 0W40 with such a high HTHS).
