I live up here in Chilly Canada and wonder which 5W30 or 5W20 flows best in the winter in our climate. I love to use PP but don't think it's the best in the cold.

Petro-Canada synthetic 5w30 has the LOWEST cold-weather numbers I have EVER seen by far.

I don't believe you will find any lower....and that includes M1.

Show me the numbers - CCS or Mrv?

edge 5w30 is 4100/11500 -30/-35 repectively

M1 0w30 is ????/11100 at -35/-40

PetroCAN 0w-30 is 4200/14500 at -35/-40

Mobil wins the numbers game. Not saying its a good cold oil though

Look for a Ow-XX, 0W will ALWAYS read lower than a 5W-XX, API requires the oil to be rated in the proper category - if it meets 0W it was to be rated as 0W. A 0W-20 would be the best bet if the MFG allows OR you only short trip.

That's a PAO synthetic with a pour point of -54C. The OP is looking at Group III oils.

Oops my bad

To the OP, why not a PAO syn?

group 3 not needed, "conventional" 5w20 is group 2+, and all conventional 5w20 has better cold properties than any 5w30 synthetic group 3. for even better properties, go to a synthetic 5w20 - the cold property is superlative, but only just a little better than the conventional, so i don't waste my money on it, just plug my car in in the morning. The cheapest 5w20 synthetic in canada, is formula 1 synthetic on sale at Canadian Tire: it goes on sale for 40 or 50% OFF once a year, usually in the fall sometime, you have to watch for the sale, and then stock up. sometimes the sale is ONLY for saturday and sunday.

I have already corrected you on this before. It is NOT true!

I cited a few examples as such, and am not going back to find them again.

Meh - Had to find it.

This is completely incorrect.

Let's see....how about we compare, say Q-Horsepower 5W30 to...Mobil Clean 5000 5W20

QHP
CCS - 3980@ -30*C
MRV - 12,800@ -35*C

MC5K CCS - 5100@ -30*C
MRV - 21,400@ -35*C

I don't have the numbers off the top of my head (and the Valvoline site is down for maint), but the QHP 5W30 also has lower CCS and MRV numbers than Valvoline conventional 5W20.

Vastly superior huh?

A SAE 20 would be better than most any 30 when you get to -20C and up, but a 0W will outflow a 5W at -35C and below. Now the issue is PAO are bad lubricants** so the bearing get oil pressure and everything else suffers ...

unless blended with 15-20+ % AN and POE or the like

If you are going for PC for cold weather performance from a Group III than it only makes sense to use PC 0W30. Its cold weather stats are superior to the 5W30 offering and there is *no* 0W30 oil in Canada priced as competitively i.e approximately $5.50 per litre bottle. It is a no brainer.

The chevron oil "only" meets API SH though when it comes to gas engines. So if you have an engine in which the manufacturer recommends SL or SM then I'm not so sure you wanna go with an SH oil...thoughts?
