yeah, i know, any brand will serve me well. i get that, but i just want to know what brand conventional oil people prefer and why for a 4k interval.

95 chev lumin w/184k on it..mostly in town but do not hesitate to take it on long trips..runs like new.

2000 dodge [censored] caravan. love the engine, everything else on the stupid van is falling apart. actually runs really good with 134k on it.

What is the manufacturers recommended viscosity range for this engine??
In the EU Castrol GTX or Magnetec are both cheap and very good oils, or Liqui Moly have a few cheapish dino oils that produce good UOA results.

Assuming oil pressure is normal, I'd probably use Quaker State Defy 5w30, only because I'm a skeptic about the Zn/P level in API SN rated oil. I notice the datasheets on rated oil usually has near the limit on phosphorus, which suggests to me they'd like to use more if they could.
With the age of the engine, a high mileage oil might help keep the seals in shape. But I don't know how effective that stuff really is.
I could also happily use Valvoline or Pennzoil's conventionals, not for any great reason but just because I have in the past.

Same levels of zn/p as SM oils....

Is it just me or people seem to think that VWB edges out PYB and shows better results in UOA’s by a little bit?

Not just you, for modest OCI's VWB is mighty tough to beat IMO.

+1 I used both when I had my 99 Lumina. Both ran nicely in the 3.1

Nothing wrong with PYB, but to save a couple of bucks and have the same performance level, my vote goes to Mobil Super; $13 and some change for 5qts at Wal-Mart.
