I chose the Sunbird over the Chevy. The Sunbird was basically a one-owner vehicle (purchased with 12K miles). It seemed to be in better overall shape. I slapped in a new PCV valve today. I will install a new 02 sensor tomorrow then drive it until it drops.
I installed the Bosch 1 wire 02 sensor, but it had the clip on the end, no splicing. Engine seemed to run a little smoother and quieter.
The biggest problem with this car is that it SOUNDS like a beater, due, I believe to an exhaust leak. Everything seems pretty solid and intact on the exhaust. It appears that exhaust is escaping somewhere between the flanges where the catalytic converter bolts on. Is there a gasket here? Would it be best to just eliminate the cat?

The Sunbird is running great. I fixed the exhaust leak and the vehicle sounds much better. I am running Auto-Rx through it to clean it out.
What did you do to fix the exhaust leak? I have one too, I think it might be coming from the same thing.
There's an asbestosy steel wooly donut gasket in the exhaust downpipe flange. Suprisingly, came apart ok on my 96. The springs under the bolt/studs look just like valve springs.
These cars have a dreadfully nonsophisticated exhaust that sounds loud even when working 100%. That donut gasket/flange setup takes the place of the wire mesh flexpipe you see on pretty much every other FWD car.

Ahh, see I have the flexpipe, guess that isn't my problem then.

Ahh, see I have the flexpipe, guess that isn't my problem then.
My exhaust problem was the gaskets where the catalytic converter mounted. Had to replace those and it sounds great, now.
