which brand should I use

Hi you all,

I'm getting ready for my next OCI and wonder what brand of air filter should I buy/get for my 01' Durango 4.7 V-8 engine. I'm having another mechanic other than the dealership handle this service this time. Is a FRAM better than a PUROLATOR?

Open the boxes and look! Some purolators don't have that many pleats and look cheap. Also check the gasket machining. I would put them roughly as equals in quality, on average. Fram's air filters aren't as bad as their oil ones... and Honeywell makes vacuum cleaner bags, home AC air filters, etc.

The last few Fram air filters I have looked at have been made in China if that matters to you.

The way I would compare is to get one of each, and compare them side to side. I exclusively use STP and Fram airfilters, they both fit my vehicles well. Purolator is good too, but just compare them and make your choice from there.

Steve, I looked at a purolator and it was made overseas aswell, not much we can do about it.

I like the STP air filters. I think the one for my 3.9 is made in Mexico. Purolator is about the same, I think that one is made in Canada. Either one works fine. I do not care for the Fram filter, the foam rubber seal is too thick and makes it very hard to close the snaps on my air intake housing.

I'll take all your advises and compare them each. It appears my biggest issue would be the gasket frames around the filter so I'll start from there. Alreadh used the internet/websites to get part numbers so purchasing will be more quickly.

Usually OEM air filter fits and filters better than aftermarket for not much more. Few dollars more spread over several years is more or less $1 a year. I'll go with OEM air filter.

Hi guys/gals,

I decided to get a Purolator filter as I did a visual comparison between the two and found the Purolator to be slightly better.

The Fran has a orange frams with a slight plastic flash at the corners but though no big deal and the Purolator has none but had black frame. Either case the Purolator "classic" was chosen this time.

I bought a Purolator and regret it. Don't know why I was stupid enough to keep it and install it. The gasket has imperfections that bother me, and it seems way too hard--definitely harder than OEM.

Also bought a Purolator cabin air filter, and that thing is an abomination. Total piece of garbage.

For air filters, I'm not really brand dependant. Open them and look at them. I'm also not too concerned about where it's made, more what it looks like. Is the media nice and thick or flimsy? Is there a lot of it there (many pleats)? How does the gasket look?

I've got Frams in both our cars now, and the Chinese made Fram for my Nissan looks better than the OEM Nissan filter.

Agree, look into Fram's charcoal cabin filter for a good one. Not cheap($), but laced with arm&hammer baking soda for odor control and a really good element for dust,bacteria etc.

Interesting, I wonder how that works with a car full of dogs?

There are HEPA filters and standard filters. The HEPA filters out the very small bacteria that the standard does not.

I would love a filter like that, because then at least I'd have confidence that the seal was good, which is very important. With the Purolator I have in there now, I'm not so sure.

I also have had excellent service from WIX/NAPA Gold. However; from month to month, you never know if the supplier has changed so look before buying as eljefino suggested.

I like the Purolator PureOne that's in my car. After ~1.5 years and the airbox on the other side of the filter could probably pass a white glove test

Purolator and Wix/Napa Gold seems to be reputable brands overall. Maybe even a good AC Delco, but if I put it in and it's not snug, I may just return the item and find a more secure fit into the airbox.

Each application is different. Some filters from some brands work 'better' that others at times, even though brand 1 is typically more favored than brand 2. Brand 2 may be the better choice for you.

Get a reusable filter. Spectre make decent filter at a affordable price. They have a $10 rebate on there sit.
