Where's my coolant going?

1999 Malibu with 3100 V6.

1. Engine had head gaskets and lower intake manifold gasket done in September 2006 less than 25,000 miles ago.

2. UOA from three weeks ago showing zero glycol.

3. Cooling system pressure tested in December to 18 psi (factory rated 15 psi). New pressure cap.

4. No white residue in tailpipe or smell of coolant in exhaust.

5. Heater works fine.

The coolant is the infamous Dex-Cool but I think that is unrelated to the issue. In October, I did have a strange occurence where I believe I lost a few ounces (noticable in overflow) of coolant from what seemed to be the water pump seal. It blew out coolant, and I noticed because of steam rising from the corner of the hood, but it was not repeatable and it did not show under pressure testing.

Car has never overheated, and never seen higher than 5/8 of the way through the temperature gauge. Usually sits right in the middle but it does move up in low speed traffic (I do not believe it is buffered).

When I got home tonight, there seemed to be almost a fine bit of steam coming from the same area but it was also quite foggy out, and when I got inside, I opened the hood with the engine running and did not see it.

From Tuesday to Saturday, driving about 250 miles, I used basically from the center seam of the overflow tank down until the point the low coolant light was on when accelerating until the engine was hot. As well, my serpentine belt has been squealing (not like something is stuck but a continuous chirp) like a hot [censored] for a few weeks.

What I am thinking is the water pump seal has gone bad and is trickling coolant out, and some gets onto the belt. There is no coolant on the floor when it sits parked over night, so I am confounded as to where it is going and why.

Hopefully just a water pump, I really do not want to do another gasket job on this car if that is what it is. If the water pump needs changed, I'll have them do the belt, and flush the cooling system completely before filling with G-05.

I had a small, and very hard to detect leak by my water pump bypass outlet on a 1992-build 3.1. Didn't catch it until it caused substantial loss of coolant due to eventual catastrophic failure of the seal (in a rural area where it was -40degF, I might add, so a complete loss of coolant incident would've been quite dangerous).

So keep looking. You're bound to find the leak somehow. Get that water pump seal/water pump fixed, it will fail catastrophically at some point.

Pressure test when the engine is hot and leave it under pressure for a longer period , 30 minutes or more.

Remove the Serpentine belt and give the Water Pump a spin by hand and check for play and/or binding.

I'd replace the pump. Sometimes they will leak then quit or only leak at a certain rpm. The Chiltons labor time for that pump is .7.........Most of it is scraping the old gaskets off.

I was losing a slight amount of coolant in my truck. I could smell coolant, but never saw any on the garage floor, or anything obvious from above. I looked from underneath and saw the stains from the coolant adjacent to some hoses. One of the clamps was loose and that turned out to be my problem.

I just looked underneath the car and there is a real nice coating of anti-freeze all over it. I found where it went. Last night I got home at 3 am with the low coolant light on, so I looked around and thought it was the water pump and now I am pretty sure it is.

I will get the water pump done for sure, coolant flush and replace with G-05 to get Dex-Cool out of the system, and possibly the serpentine belt if I am feeling rich.

0.5 for the pressure test, 1.2 for the pump, 0.7 for the belt and 0.7 for the flush are what the book lists, hopefully it isn't all by the book rate stacked. 3.1 hours at $90 an hour is $279 plus what I imagine will be a $45 charge for coolant, $55 for water pump and $20 for the belt...a nice round $400 bill.

I had a pinhole leak in my waterpump gasket that the dealer found when my 06 yukon was in for warranty service last year. You couldn't see it until the p/s pump & FEAD belt was removed and it leaked so little coolant that all I would notice was the level in the reservoir went down about 1/2 inch every month.

The mechanic only noticed it when he had his face in there trying to get one of the bolts back in on the p/s pump and heard it softly hissing. It never leaked enough for the coolant to drip off the engine. Fortunately, they decided not to mess around and just replaced the whole water pump.

SO you probably have some minute leak somewhere.

Yeah, I had issue with the water pump seal ejecting about two cups of coolant in the fall, but then it cleared up and passed the pressure test. Debris must have got in it. Now it just won't hold on under pressure and I am getting about 500 miles per gallon...on coolant.
