Hey fellow bitogers,my daughter is staying over this Saturday. She needs an oil change in her 2002 Hyundai Elantra and asked if i would do it for her (of course you all know the answer to that

) any way,she stopped briefly yesterday, I popped the hood just to see where it is and I could not find it. I`m assuming its on the back of the motor, and if the filter is black, thats probably why I didnt spot it.Also I would like to put GC in it for her,do you guys think thats a good oil for the 2.0 in this car??

Thanx.

We own two Hyundai vehicles and run synthetic 5W20 year around in them. I would think that GC is kind of a heavy oil for your application?

While I don't know where your filter is for the Elantra, ours use a canister type filter.

We furnish the oil and have the dealer change it. Many recommend the OEM filter.

We live about 90 road miles north of Panama City Florida and deal with very hot summers.

Never have had any issues with 5W20 oil. The police department here also uses 5W20 in their Ford Police vehicles without issue.

On my wife's 05 Sonata it's behind the passenger front wheel, I reach up from below to change it. I don't know if yours is the same.

5W-20 oil,are yours new Hyundais? I`m almost certain I had read one time in her manual that it recommends 10w30. I may be wrong about that though. I have to read it again.

Good in terms of protection, but may not be so good when it comes to fuel economy.

yeah, thats what I was thinkin too pete.

2005 Tuscan and 2007 Santa Fe.

On the old filler cap it is marked 5W20 and owners manual also lists it as being OK for the application.

I would think you will find that if recommended that a 5W20 will give you better economy + winter starting. If it does not recommend a 5W20 for that year, am sure that 5W30 would be recommended.

GC is a heavy oil and runs almost a 40 weight. Power and economy would take a hit in my opinion.

I used Amsoil's application guide for your 02 Elantra and got the following info:
Above 32°F......20W-40, 20W-50
Above -9°F......10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50
Below 95°F......5w30, 5W-40

so I would run 10-30 or 5-30. actually, I would probably run 10-30 summer and 5-30 winter. IMHO

This car has a cabin air filter??

I am simply going by the amsoil application guide. Purolator also lists a filter for that car. I regret to say that I have never worked on an Elantra. Many cabin filters are behind the glove box... but I cant speak to Hyundais. check the owners manual.

so, if you dont mind rebates, head over to wally world and get 5 qts of Penz Plat and use the $15 rebate; then head to Advance Auto for the oil, air, cabin filters and use the Purolator rebate.

This car's cabin air filter is in the glove box.
Use the oil filter from the dealership, it's $4.50 and high quality.
Oil filter is behind the passenger tire.
The oil for the car as the manual states is
5w30 up to 90f
10w30 up to 105f
5 or 10w40 up to 115f
after that 20w50 unless you have a calispec
5w20 was never listed nor has the car been back specked.

Wow thanx rick!! so with those oil specs,I probably can use GC in her car then? I`m very glad you told me where the oil filter is located thanx.

I had a 02 Gls loaded, and it did not have a cabin air filter.

I used Mobil 1 5W30 and a mobil-1 oil filter.. Sounded good, and was not too thin, But i dont think i would use 5W20 in these engines, as it may be just a little too thin.

open the hood and look down on the left side facing the front of the car.down under the alternator you should be able to see the filter, there is a small plastic cover under the filter if you take this off its super easy to get at the filter.

There was a bulletin on the cabin air filter a few years back. It stated that the cars did not come from the factory equipped with a cabin air filter. However, if you wished to install one the vehicle was equipped to handle it.

The part number for the filter was listed as: 97133-2D000.

The socket for the filter to slide into is located behind the glovebox as previously mentioned.
