When your engine overheats very badly, what all happens inside that make it have from no effect at all, to possibly needing a new or totally rebuilt engine?

things warp, like the heads and things can crack depending on how hot things get. heat distorts metal and that is what causes bad thing to happen to your engine..

Ok. Just asking because the engine that came for the S10.. You won't believe this.. also had a rod knock. *That's right: Old, rod knock engine taken out.. Used engine put in.. had rod knock.
crazyoildude, the guy putting it in says he wants to "have the crank cut, with matching bearings maybe they will be .01 or .02 over, polish the rods, polish or regrind the cam, and that way I will have a good rotating assembly. The head is cast iron so he says he can check that himself, and he says he will check all clearances. Use gaskets from a 350 rebuild kit and get it going." Do you agree with that?
It was either that, or buy a local engine from a 1995 and just change the things that need to to make it bolt in/work.

so, what's the total dollar value on this thing gonna run? At some point you should just let it go and buy a x00k mile Nissan or Toyota.....you live in Pa.....Manheim has PLENTY of get-rounds for a little bit of nothing.
Are you POSITIVE it's a rod knock? Are you using the same trans each time? You're sure it's good?

This time, he disconnected the transmission at the torque converter to see if it was the torque converter making the noise, and it wasn't.

wow....you have some bad luck for sure! Crankshaft work is gonna cost. Not so much the parts but the labor will hurt....doesn't the engine come with a warranty?
An S10 that needs an engine swap should be a death sentence.If its 96-up it cannot have a V8 swap (OBDII),otherwise its the same bad engine going in after another.For $1200 you could probably buy one that runs (preferably get a Ranger or Japanese job).

Got screwed by Clearwater Auto Parts in Minnesota. They sent the one with no fuel injection.
After this ORDEAL is over, I think I will order those upgraded injectors from Trav.

After this ORDEAL is over, I think I will order those upgraded injectors from Trav.
Calling Rob now, he got a new phone the old one was as messed up as the engine! Maybe it fell in the engine.
On top of all that the pistons will expand and sieze In the cylinders. After they cool down there's no compression
Have had only 1 overheat damage:
Bought 79 Monte Carlo for GF back then. She was on the freeway and noticed some power loss and temp climbing. Instead of pulling over, she risked flooring it to go as fast as she can figuring when/if it dies, she would at least have it closer to home. Grrrrr
All I can say is the crack on one side of the block was opened enough that the freeze plugs were missing (must have fell out).
To the wreckers it went and bought her another car to get her back on the road. Didn't have time to mess with much back then (work time).

My dear wife melted the 1.6 in my 72 Datsun PU. Totally not her fault, I was nursing it along with a leaky radiator. Anyway the truck was driven without coolant until it detonated through the crown of #4 and bent the rod. I bought a wreck with a bad engine. I sent the head out to be rebuilt and I stole the #4 piston/rod and cap. I re-used the rod bearing and IIRC. I re-used the piston rings too. I was very lucky. Maybe the Castrol 20 w 50 saved the engine from catastrophic injury IDK. I got another 50 k miles out of the truck. I dont recall any major issues. I also ran a 50$ Dart to destruction trying to get home. I thought it was just a blown fan belt. It turned out to be a leaky hose that slipped the belt fooling me until it was too late. Once it started knocking it became a death run.

In my youth we did an s10/350 swap and a ranger/302 swap. The s10 was an auto with 4.10 gears. It was a rocket but handles so horribly at 90mph it shook so bad you thought the truck was coming apart.
The ranger was a bit better. It had a t-5 and 3.73s. It was a total blast to drive. Neither were mine but I did help with the installs. The ranger was funny. We had a bench seat that ended up getting part of the center cut out so we could actually get it into 2nd,4th and reverse.
Both trucks ended up getting impounded. Ontario mto caught them at a check stop and they were both loaded up onto flatbeds and ended up at a wrecker.
Almost exactly a year apart they got impounded,at the same springtime mto stop on the 400. Good times
