When to start using a synthetic oil on a new vehicle

Upon purchasing my 2003 Corolla (1.8L) I asked the Toyota Master Tech when I could change to synthetic oil. Without a seconds delay he said "one thousand miles but break it in by the book". He also stated that his new Toyota V-8 truck was changed over at 1000 miles to M1 10-30.

I changed over @1K (RedLine 10-30), then again 5K later. I'm running the current oil 7500 miles. To date no measurable usage, no odd start up noises, it just does what it's supposed to do.

I usually wait until the first scheduled oil change for most passenger cars.

At that time, I will change over to full synthetic. My recommendation would be the 5w30 ASL for most all climates.
