When to change oil by the color

I guess I can't argue too much with pedal's methodology. Everyone has already pointed out how imperfect it is ... but if there's an error, it's generally on the side of caution.

If he was using Castrol and not changing the oil because it was looking even after several thousand miles, he could be sludging up the motor ... but as it is, he might just be changing it a little prematurely. No biggie.

My final decision is to use 15w40 Royal Purple in my daily driven 427 LS1 superstroker which I plan to keep at least another 15 years. I already exchanged all my 10w40 Royal Purple to the 15w40. It's only $3.99 at my local NAPA. My filter will be changed at 3000 miles and the oil at 6000 miles. I'll let everyone know how the oil looks after 6000 miles.

If you are going to change your filter at 3000 then I suggest for the first time you do this cut open the filter. I can almost guarantee you will see no contaminates that are visible to the eye. My point is, if you are going to change at 6000 anyway don't waste the time, money and especially hassle of a 3000 mile filter change. It ain't going to make a hill of beans difference in anything at 200,000 miles. IMO

You are absolutely right! I am on the right track in regard to this now too!
I just called Longrider, which is what 15w40 Royal Purple is marketed under for the trucking industry. They have all their gasoline engined cars on 15w40 at 10000 change intervals without a filter change. I now can get that by the gallon. Shipped to my door for 4 gals will cost me $75.00. However they advise me waiting till 7500 miles to switch over from conventional to seat my rings. The Royal Purple 15w40 is so slippery so the break in is advised on conventional oil. I am at 5000 so far on the break in conventional oil.
