...things can get interesting!

I was in a local AAP picking up an oil filter, and ran into a few people I know. One asked what transmission fluid he should put in his car.(Spec for Dex III). I told him that I thought Dex VI would be a nice upgrade for the car (he does lots of city driving-extra protection).

Anyways, the employee gets all like."What?" If you're going to use syn transmission fluid in that car- M1 is the only thing to use- esp in older cars!" Okay, umm...

I'm not seeing why M1 would be any better the Dex VI (full syn) in this case. (for a GM car) While I know that Mobil 1 ATF is good in quite a few cars, would it actually be better than DEX VI in this case (Valvoline full syn). I'm thinking no...

See this is why I despise those employees...they make these blanket statements with no fact to back it up at all. Or their justification is that it worked well in their mom's boyfriend's car so it MUST be an awesome product.

Granted they can't know how every product works in every application but they should at least use some objective reasoning and explain themselves. That's why I come to sites like this, where people really know.

Oh tig, I know it's good stuff. (I'm considering for my car, also spec'd for Dex III-so I could run it too..)

I just fail to see here why a GM spec'd ATF wouldn't be a better choice, since his car is also a early 00s car..

Mobil 1 ATF is a great fluid but it doesn't spec for every application. In the end we must be responsible for our own lube choices.

Well, he did say it worked well in his 00 Monte Carlo...so at least he had omething to go on, I guess..

dave,
Who knows, XM may make the GM fluid. XM does make a Dex 6 but the GM branded fluid is no doubt a fine fluid as well.

I read once who made the GM stuff. I forget the name but it wasn't XOM. As far as GM is concerned anything Dex3 is recommended to use Dex6. Or another way to put is, GM only supports Dex6 in their transmissions.

From personal experience I had M1 Dex3 in my Regal and now Valvoline Full Synthetic Dex6. If there are any differences, I didn't notice. Maybe alittle faster downshifts.

I'm not impressed with Mobil 1 ATF specs.

Reads almost like a syn blend ATF.

Compare that to:

Do you have to buy your PC products from a local distributor up there, or is it readily available?

Gas stations (everywhere), but definitely cheaper from the distributor.

Overkill, have you ever inquired at at a gas station about a better price? I think I'm going to talk to the owner at the one I use and see if I could get better pricing by the case. Would just be more convenient for me if I could get it there.

Nope, went to the bulk centre and just started buying it there. Never bothered with the gas station.
