wheel bearing

So the wheel bearing bleeped out on the 2005 two wheel drive Frontier at only 26,000 miles; the other side went south at only 19,000 miles. In a moment of weakness and uncharacteristically, I foolishly paid a mechanic $400 to replace it that time. It's a simple job as it's a 2wd and I'm doing it myself this time (mechanic was upfront and told me it was only 1 hour labor when I had it done the first time).

What do you think of this $64 eBay bearing (hub assy)?

Can't beat the price or be worse than what came from Nissan, I am thinking.

Hello, I took a quick look at the 2 bearings you linked to and couldn't be sure that the Nissan one didn't have a difference on its rear side.
Does it appear to you there's a separate cover on the Nissan and the other one is one piece?
...just something I noticed. It could have just been a feature of the particular photograph.

Just gave RockAuto a look and they had no bearings for your application.

I would pay for a Timken or other national brand or OEM.

The one on EBAY will fail in 370 days, a few days after the warranty.

An aftermarket light or mirror is fine on EBAY, but not a wheel bearing. You know its from China with poor quality control.

I have found OEM or high quality items on EBAY so its a place to look. (MOPAR parts, Blistein shocks).

Rock Auto does list bearings for his application. I just checked.

Brands they have that I would be comfortable with include Beck/Arnley, Raybestos, Timken, National and SKF. They range in price from around $90 to $190.

OK but I can't imagine China - eBay bearings failing any sooner than the OEMs did.

timkens i believe are made in china, so no gains going that route.



You know what the problems are these days? Sealed bearings. Back in the old daze one could repack bearings. I remember my 4X4 '88 Ranger had a death grind / groan from the bearings. A simple disassembly and repack cured it. No problem!

He just said that both OEM bearings failed within 26k miles, doubt that the Ebay bearing would be much worse. Most store brand bearing from parts houses are equal to the Ebay offering. Then they offer a Timkin, National etc. for a near OEM price Ive seen both last a long time and Ive also seen both fail in a short time. Its like rolling the dice at times. Replaced a front unit bearing on an 85 Corvette with a Timkin unit that within 10k miles the hub flange fractured from the hub shaft that's mounted in the bearing. Caliper held the wheel on. Timking bearing was fine, but their forged (guess) hub and shaft were not.

Regardless of how soon the OE unit went out I would get a quality part to replace it with. You are saving on the labor so invest in the part. Was the Frontier under warranty when it went out the first time? At that mileage I would kick and scream to the dealership or Nissan about it...bearing going out that soon should be replaced free...

Wrong. the Timken plants in China service China...not the US. That OEM hub unit was probably an NTN or NSK or Koyo bearing.Sounds like the vehicle sat for a long period of time and the seals failed.
