Does anyone know if those bearing packing tools the two inverted cones work? Package claims that it pushes out the old grease and replaces it with new. Thanks for any information

This is the one I've got. You set the bearing on the cone; screw the other cone against the bearing and snug it down; snap your grease gun onto the Zerk fitting; pump the grease into it and watch the grease come out between the rollers.

Does a beautiful job.

#34550 works excellent. I bought a similar product off of the snapon truck. Been using it for years and has worked flawlessly.

Sure they'll work. By hand is very easy and good, but a messier.
When using any bearing packing device like that, make sure that the grease in the grease gun is high temp wheel bearing grease, not some general lube.

just purchased the one at napa did one wheel bearing worked well but did use alot of grease.found it a lot easier than doing by hand always had trouble getting grease going through rollers thanks for your replys

Why spend the money on a tool? Two hands work the best IMO.

Well, it's nice to keep the grease off my hands for one reason; and secondly, it's way faster with the tool. All that for a financial investment of $10 is money well spent in my book.

I've been using a SnapOn packing tool for years. Think it would be urfair to charge customer for extra time involved with hand packing. My procedure involves thoroughly flushing old grease out with mineral solvent in parts washer, then blowdrying bearing/race assembly so that only fresh, new, Mystic Hi-Temp is in contact with load surfaces. Same procedure for over 25 years,, NO COMEBACKS

I use one it does a good job. But also I still use the old hands when I left the packer in the toolcase...and too lazy to get it.

The metal one I bought was kinda a pain to use with a grease gun.
I bought a Lisle bearing packer that is a clear little container. You fill it with grease and put on the bearings and push down on it.

It has a lid that the bearing sits on top and the grease comes up thru a hole. It works pretty well. They are about $20

If you have a high turnover of bearings, I can see this being good.

If you are a back-yarder and looking at bearings a couple time per year, I think had is best...cleaning that contraption up would take longer, and make you messier than hand greasing.

Whatever you use make sure you clean the bearing and inspect it before putting it back in service. I also had my son hit the bearing with a hair dryer to evaporate all of the solvent, and to get it nice and warm for repacking.
