OK, so if you have two 5 quart jugs, what do you use to measure out the other single quart ?

I pour in the amount that looks right and don't worry about it... A little over full or under, really doesn't make any difference...

This problem is why I take advantage of a sale that happens at Advance and Autozone regularly.

Sometimes the term of the sale is: Buy 5qts and 1 filter at a discount price, and if you want additional quarts, those extra quarts are much cheaper than regular price.

Same here ! 5 individual quarts is much better value than 5.1 qt jug, especially for Mobil 1 0W40 before WM had it in 5 qt jug last year.

I try to buy the 5 quart jugs when I can. Only two cars I service use exactly 5 quarts (my Camaro & girlfriend's Mustang) while my Jeep takes 6 quarts, which works out OK as it's two gallon jugs of Rotella T5. 1 1/2 jug per change so its two changes worth.

My civic and my parents cars all use less than the jugs so I'll either keep some on hand for make-up oil or throw it in a jug as random oil for my father's Saturn that burns/leaks a lot.

Agreed. I have had 6 and 7 qt vehicles before( trucks mostly )and I always got what I needed of the same brand( in qts as the brands I use aren't sold at Wal-Mart in jugs ). While I know mixing won't cause harm I prefer to use all the same. I never mix weights nor oil type( i.e. dino, blend, synthetic )either.

I definetly buy nothing but 5 quart jugs at normal prices.

I always buy a quart of the oil i plan to use for a vehicle so i can remember what it is and easy to store and measure when i have partial quarts from the 5 quart jugs.

$$$ at first, but it will get used eventually and cheaper in the long run.

For me it is whatever I have on hand from the last oil change irregardless of what brand. My truck uses one quart between changes, and has since new, so I always need a top off quart. I use synthetic and always 5w20, but don't worry about the what brand the extra quart is that is being added to my 7 quart sump.

I don't mix the initial fill. For top offs, I'll use whatever is around....lately Formula Shell from a Costco case sale.

1 qt. Delo 400 15w40
1 qt. Quaker State Conventional 10w40
2 qts. Quaker State Conventional 10w30

It's so nice to drive something that isn't picky about oil, isn't it?

I try to stay with the same manufacturer (I feel the additive pack probably works better that way).

For my Forester, the Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 5 qts are a good deal and available at Walmart, but the individual quarts are eye-watering. I'm using the Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-20 from Menards as +1 and top off.

I'll probably switch to Valvoline Synpower 0W-20 and then use NAPA full synthetic as a +1 and top off, as they are the same family.

It's more convenient on my Malibu, I just dump in the 5qt and go. It uses virtually no oil between changes.

In my STI, I run stuff that comes in quarts anyway, so it's less of an issue.

Both my Subaru cars tend to use a little oil between changes (more with the Forester), so I wouldn't want to drive around with a huge 5 qt. jug in the back for a whole OCI (such as a road trip).

My outdoor power equipment gets any halfies or leftovers.

My Prius takes only 4 quarts so I use the 5th as my top off. Usually it's M1 or Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 which is fine for the Odyssey.

That G-oil (green stuff) 5w30 bio-syn. Got a couple free jugs from the rebate deals. Used one on an OCI, kept the other handy for top-offs.

After that's gone, I'll use the cheapest oil in my stash. My vehicles don't use much, but my sis' 4runner leaks a plenty - that gets cheap dino.

I use a 1qt RubberMaid MixerMate Bottle to measure out the qt or half or etc... that I need to reach the final fill. Its nice since it also has the 20oz mark for the lawn equipment.

I think it was only 2 bucks at the local Walmart when I purchased it.

Unsure how it would do for storage but for the quick fill and transfer, it works great.

This really comes in handy when you are doing a blend. Take an old 5qt jug of whatever brand you are using and pour in your blend. In my case, I use a 5qt of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and do a 3qt 0w40 + 2.5qt Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 blend. I do this in advance to have it ready for the change so it is a simply job.

I used to have oil burners and have only recently broken the habit of buying an extra quart or two beyond the stated capacity, of course the same brand and viscosity as what's going in (and is in) the crankcase in the first place.
