what's this exhaust part called?

Have the exhaust apart on my 91 volvo 940 turbo wagon.

The front pipe of the converter, and the downpipe from the manifold, are flared or "belled out" and there's a fibrous "packing" donut in there. Two clamps meet and cinch (via 3 bolts) the "bell mouths" together around this donut.

My clamps are rusty and fell off when I looked at them wrong.

But they don't seem to be called clamps.

What are they called, so I can call them by their right name when I look for parts?

It would be where 31370 is in this diagram, but they don't really show it right. I think 31370 is the donut anyway.

yes, the gasket is a gasket, but what is the thing not in the diagram that holds it all together?

It looks like you extracted that from the service manual. If you have that, look around for replacement procedures for the front part of the exhaust (resonator forward). They usually walk through unbolting and bolting each connection and refer to all the bits and pieces by name. That usually gets me up to speed on how stuff fits together and what it is called, even when I am not doing exactly what they have outlined in the book.

Good Luck!

No no springs. You would kind of expect them too. I think it's there for "RWD twist" where the engine torques.

I got the diagram from walkerexhaust.com, it is a great resource for this sort of thing. I even direct-linked.

So do they make "split" collectors that one can finagle around an already flared pipe? I'd hate to have to frig with this even yet more.

Thinking of just getting one of those two inch wide band clamps and

Duh, muffler bearings!

j/k

Ok but for real, I checked rockauto and it shows a "KLARIUS Part # 401645 Kit" which is listed as a catalytic converter installation kit. I wonder if this is what is referred to as the (exhaust) flange bolts. I'm used to the ones that have springs on them. I'm assuming that one of the flanges spin on the pipe and the other end is fixed/welded onto the pipe.

Autozone exhaust spring bolts I wonder if one of these match that of your original design?

You can also cut a flange and weld it back together on the pipe if you have some sort of suitable welding equipment available.

NAPA has split flanges. Do a search on their web site to see if any of these numbers look promising: 31871 31884 31901 31902 31953 35455 36132

If you are talking about the flanges that hold the flex pipe together and the flex pipe is still in good shape and not leaking why bother with the flanges? Use some muffler tape and just wrap the two ends. As long as the flex pipe is in good shape the flanges are really meaningless IMO assuming the flex pipe is a rock solid mount to the exhaust

Thanks guys this is what I'm looking for!

There is no flexpipe anywhere in the system. The whole exhaust can move fore and aft a little on its rubber hangers. This is here for twist, when the engine pushes really hard against the axle. Otherwise I'd solid-weld it. I have considered cutting and rewelding.

Whatever I do has to pass state inspection, so I can't use that dryer vent stuff etc.

FTR, Summit has them listed more conveniently with diameters etc.

Thanks for putting me on the right track.

Epilogue, looks like NAPA and walker 31879 or 31876 are my bet. I'll cut and weld. I could spring load it but think I'll just go with regular bolts like OE.

When you make your cuts, consider that the obvious/shortest positions for the cuts might not be the best position. Your weld may be very strong at first but eventually it will be the weakest part of the flange. Cutting at a 45 degree or 60 degree angle might add a couple of years to the life of your repair.
