18,000 miles on a Purolator L-24458, oil was changed every 6000 miles.
10,000 mi. on a NAPA Gold (made by Wix) and 10,000 mi. on a Pure One. Both on Mobil 1 oil. I cut both open and they were in excellent condition.
7510 miles, want to go longer, and eventualy will.
I ran the same oil filter and oil fill for over 11,500 miles in the Neon. The filter was an AC-Delco Ultraguard Gold UPF-53- and that's a small coffee-mug-size filter!

my neighbor bought a car a chain restaurant had- about 70k miles original filter had to destructively remove it during engine overhall- 1/2 of sludge on cyl head.
Neighbor/friend missed his oil filter change at 6 months on his 99 Durango, using Amsoil's 0W-30 and SDF42. Oil and filter were changed at approximately 20k miles/1 year. His was the first oil filter I ever cut apart because I just had to see how this filter held up inside. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the media appeared to all still be intact and still well connected to the metal endcaps. No sludge was noted, either. Wish now we would have pulled an oil sample at that time...
That's why I recently started changing the filter every 4th oil change (I do 3,000 mile OCI's) as I finally realized I was wasting a lot of money on filters. (I use cheap dino so 3,000 oil changes are very inexpensive)

Jeez, and I thought 4500 was hurting the filter. I see I was wrong. I'll change it every other from now on.

Actually, I think it was Fram who got people into the habit. They used to have printed on the box something like "if you don't change your oil filter during an oil change, you leave a quart of dirty oil in the engine". Heck, it really made you feel guilty if you didn't change your filter!
now youi just leave a lemon sized quanity of oil in the super small filter.

Yes, the "Pay me now ..or pay me later" ad campaign.
I recall the evolution to "every other" oil change happening in the 70's after the cleaner burning engines came on line with the wide spread availability of unleaded fuel. In my late 70's GM products it stated that if you use time for your OCI it's every oil change ..but if you used mileage it was every other oil change (which ever occurred first).
