What's so special about Amsoil?

I have seen it at some NAPA stores in the past. Not online though.

I believe most Napa stores are franchises, and individual owners can stock the odd brand, if they wish. AmSoil is certainly not universally stocked at Napa stores, however.

The NAPA online site lets you pick your local store to see what they have. All the ones near me show nothing for Amsoil.

I wouldn't buy it, anyway.....Unless it was unbelievably cheap, on clearance.

I have seen it a few times, in out of the way Napa stores. Not in the anchor, major stores, though.

Can I buy it at NAPA? AutoZone? O'Reilly's? Didn't think so.

Can I buy it at NAPA?

Yes.

But why would you pay retail prices? You are in WA state. Not sure where, but order and get it the next business day or stop by and pick it up. Not that tough.

It's no more difficult to go to amsoil.com or Pablo's site than it is to go to Napa.com. Every time I order amsoil I get it in 2 days. The PC/dealer prices are pretty good. I can get OE to my door for just pennies over 5$ a QT and I don't have to use my gas to go to Walmart or fight the lines.

I still buy oil at Walmart when I go, mostly synpower because I like it for some reason.

The irony of this whole thread is the same people that dis amsoil because it's not sold at Walmart also bash Walmart regularly.

Just because amsoil isn't marketed the same doesn't mean anything, and I see no real proof that it increases cost much. Even SS is no more expensive than any other synthetics bought in quarts at parts houses.

BTW I love Walmart, they have a great successful business model.

And in the same vein, how many people see Redline Oil at the major marketers?

I don't usually involve myself in these kinds of threads either but it seems that certain hypocritic product "dissers" are to be found in every thread.

I have few doubts about the ability of Amsoil to do the job, whether it's got formal certifications or not. I just don't like gimmicky testing, no matter who's doing it.

If there is one test result that Amsoil and other marketers should get rid of for motor oils its the four-ball wear-scar results, which I shown in previous threads, is only valid for relative comparisons of oils in the lab.

Now the four-ball coefficient of fiction test result may may still hold some water if it's compared to a baseline oil of known properties.

I use ATE blue fluid. Which is a bad as a fluid but stains my reservoir dark as [censored].

No offense intended towards anyone. Just think about what someone who knows how to check out a car is thinking when they really look a car over and check service logs before they buy. So while you might be saving time and money extending the OCI, you might be hurting yourself when it comes time to sell, depending on the potential buyer.

Interesting. The tattletale for me, when looking under the hood of a used car, is whether the brake fluid is dark or clear. Clear is an instant indication that the vehicle has been well attended to. Dark.....Not so much.

If records are available, I agree on the OCI thing. I am anal about engine oil, and have never been one to exceed the recommended OCI. But that is just me.

buster,

I've often thought about this as well. I think Mobil changed from a Calcium-based detergent system to one that includes high levels of magnesium specifically to meet lowered SA specs. In fact, I was the one who first discovered this in a VOA of Mobil 1 a couple years ago.

I think Mobil went to their formulation to work better with Direct Injection engines - and other technologies that call for reduced amounts of sulfated ash.

I changed over to Amsoil when Mobil made this change. None of my engines (even my new 2015 Tacoma) use this new technology. If I DID have an engine requiring reduced levels of SA, I suspect I would not use Amsoil, or if I did, I would choose one of their options specifically made with reduced DA.

Interestingly, though, Amsoil does state that their signature series is "Fortified with detergents that exceed dexos1™ sulfated ash specifications." I don't know what the Dexos 1 SA specs are - does anyone know?

I agree btanchors. I think that Mobil moved to the latest chemistry for those reasons you mentioned. I would bet that Amsoil will make the move to this as well once more DI engines are more popular. This is not an attack on Amsoil but they are often a bit behind with their additive chemistry.

Moly came into their fomulations late as did overbased calcium. Amsoil was using a lot of Mg while Mobil was using 3k ppm of Ca. Then they changed as Mobil slowly started to reduce the metallic additives in their formulations. I was told by a guy in the industry that Amsoil uses yesterdays chemistry, boosted. And I have to say tht's exactly what it has always looked like.
