I have some mother's showtime quick detailer.

It says to use after a dust-storm or rain storm rather than washing the car.

I wax my car often with a meguair's 3 stage process (clean/polish/wax). Somehow, I don't like the idea of cleaning dust off my car with this spray and a rag.

Is this a safe practice? What's in the stuff? I'm thinking it's some kind of lube given that it's the same stuff you use with the clay bar.

Most detail products like "SHOWTIME", have some form of silicone, carnuba, or other types of thined out waxes and/or surfactants. These products are typicly used for car shows. After the owner has tubbed, scrubbed & rubbed their "baby" for the days event,(car show), they like to("California Duster" 1st), then spritz their ride periodicly with these type of products to help keep that great shine for all passers by to see. I would not use SHOWTIME, or any other type of similar product as a replacement for good old car washing. IMHO

I am scared to use a detailer to clean an entire car or even large areas of it. I prefer to wash as much dust and pollen off rather than rub it into a cloth and over the car.

I do think they are great products for limited purposes. I carry a bottle and a couple of cloths in my trunk to clean off bird droppings and other contaminents ASAP. I also use it in door jambs, and the undersides of the hood and trunk.

Thanks for the responses.

It's kind of what I had gathered. What do you guys think of the california car duster?

I love the little dash duster for interior use while sitting in traffic or whatever. Keeps the dash really clean.

I'm pretty fussy about dragging a dry anything over my paint though..

I've been using one on a Black car for over ayear with no problems. At the two West Coast Black Corvette gatherings I've gone to several people used them and you won't find a much fussier group of people when it comes to keeping paint nice.

Use light strokes, no more than the weight of the brush, preferable less force than that.

I've used one, in fact I'm on my second one now, on my black patrol cars since they first came out. One thing I've learned is not to use it on hot surface. It leaves streaks of the "wax" that's on the threads behind.Other than that they are great for black cars.

I have the dusters. I'm just not that crazy about them. I use it just above the exterior surface to 'blow' off dust and pollen between a wash and a wax. But, that is about it. As far as the dash goes, I'd rather use a slightly damp cloth so as to better capture the dust rather than sweeping it to another point inside the car.

I agree. I have been using the California Duster for about 15+ yrs on my black Classic. Never scratches the paint. The dirtier the duster gets, the better it works. The strands on my duster arn't even red any more. I have also used some of the cheap knock offs and they don't seem to work as well. This is not a replacement for a good washing, it just helps keep the dust off after you have spent hours on your favorite ride(s). I also like the California Water Blade. Not as a replacement for towel/shammy drying but, to remove the majority of the heavy water so that I can start my towel drying nice-a-nice.

In my experience, the dash duster doesn't just move the dust to another location...it "absorbs" it into the duster strands. I shake mine (outside the car, of course) from time-to-time to "clean" some of this dust out of the duster. Works great for me, YMMV.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm going to get a California Car Duster.

I tried out the California water blade, and I wasn't too fond of it. It just seemed like there was potential to scratch the car, and I still felt like I needed to wipe the car down with a soft cotton towel afterwards anyway. Also, I couldn't get it to fit in all the nooks and crannys. I haven't tried it on my extended cab full size pickup, which has about an acre of paint to dry. I'm not so worried about the paint on that one, and that may be the best place to put the water blade to use.

I just seem to have this compulsion to buy car care products on a sunny saturday morning. It's a good thing my wife doesn't have any idea what's being collected in the garage. If I stopped buying wax etc. today, and hired somebody to wax my cars once a week, I might run out before I died.

I can't resist the next hot ticket item!

You're not alone - and I expect that there is a lot more than just two of us!
