whats best to cut open a filter with?

Hello gentlemen and ladies; have a question. I am pondering buying a cutter that cuts glass jars, vases and such and wondering if I could use this device to cut open oil filters with. I have about 10-15 filters I need to cut open. This "glass cutter, or jar cutter" is about 25$ and made here in the U.S.A.

I've found the Harbor Freight Exhaust Cutoff Tool #91292 works great for filters up to 3&1/4" dia. I've used it on as big as Puro 14459. Four cutting wheels, ~$20 in store, use 20% off coopin for ~$16. There's even an HF downloadable 25% off coupon online (search) for the 4th. Don't know if there's an HF store in your area though.

I use a dremel, but only because I'm el'cheapo and already have one around.

A dedicated filter cutter like sayjac posted would be the best bet. Hard to say how yours would work without seeing it, but from your description it should.

Thanks Sayjac and gentlemen for the replies. Yeah harbor freight near me or bout 20 min away. I have a couple of PH 820 equivalent filters to cut open also. The cutter I am looking to purchase is for thick glass jars, vases and glass stuff in general, and its bout 12 lbs, and looks like good construction.

here's one you should NOT buy-the one from Summit Racing-worked for a couple of dozen filters, now the cutting whell is dull, and it bends the filter cans before it starts cutting-waht a piece of
it has only been used on thin wall oil filters

Thank ya for the replies gentlemen. I heard that the g.f.'s grandfather has a older big pipe(gas pipe and copper and aluminum cutter). May head over later this afternoon since they are having a get together and check this thing out. Girlfriends father says its old and kinda heavy.

Just an fyi. Some folks here tried the HF pipe cutter (3"iirc) and it crushed the can, didn't work.

In HF yesterday and saw the exhaust cutter on sale for $18. 25% off that tomorrow with the available coopin for the 4th.

Always ... once you have a good way to cut them open you'll want to cut everyone you get your hands on. It's good to know what the guts of the oil filter looks like after use ... tells you many things.

It would probably work OK. Not sure if anyone here has actually tried this style of exhaust pipe cutter.
