what's a good gasket material?

Ok so I bought one of those drain plugs that you install and it comes with a plastic washer. That just seems like a bad idea. What kind of gasket material do they make that I can use on that? An engineering buddy of mine says he uses cardboard for gaskets whenever needed. Something like cereal box cardboard but i'd like to see what kind of gasket material they actually have. The other option is to have a buddy weld in a bung to my pan but i'm kind of worried about warpage and then it not wanting to line up properly

Its probably a nylon washer and should be fine. Cardboard cereal boxes and for holding cereal not making gaskets.

call ur dealership. if u are talking about your oil pan drain plug, they usually dont have a gasket, they seal just fine without one.

Is this a tranny pan? What kind of bolt is it a self tapping?

They all have gaskets.

Parts stores have different varieties.

It's one of those dorman plugs that you install yourself.

What kind of "Engineering" - waste dispossal? I suspect the guys who made the plug probably had an engineer of their own choose the washer technology. After all , once it's on, it stays on.

I read the reviews and a lot of them said that the supplied washer leaks I suppose some rtv silicon on the washer would work good.

I had the same feelings as yourself about weld-in bungs, "unless MAYBE if they were done with the pan OFF and pan dry by a professional. MAYBE.) But someone here turned me on to Amazon.com where you can buy a new pan, with the drain bolt already on it!

Seems ideal, to install upon pan drop.

As to an alternate gasket material, a favorite of indys is either Permatex Ultra Black RTV, or Red RTV (high temp.) But yeah, they all have gaskets.

Multi-Layer Steel, or just go with Felpro or Victor Reinz brand.

I prefer the fiber gaskets for drain plugs, but have one of the "plastic" ones sealing an oil pressure port adapter and it doesn't leak at all.
