i live in idaho. winter temps. lows can be as low as -20. not very often. highs up in the 50s. summer time averages highs in the 80s. occasionly gets over a 100. currently using Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. manufacturer recommendation. would i be better off using a different weight oil. what brand and viscosity do you recommend

Your fine with the PP or even PU. Can't get much better then that
What the owners' manual really means is 5w30 conventional. At least in the winter, since you are using a synthetic, you might think 0w-30. I would have it in my truck if my Wally's had it on their shelf. Its owners manual says XW-XXX

I live in Central Oregon with weather thats about the same as in Idaho.
I love Valvoline oils and would recommend either Valvoline SynPower 5w30 or Valvoline MaxLife Syn 5w30 (if you vehicle is near or over 75,000).
Also use a upper tier oil filter. I favor Purolator PureOne, but Bosch or Wix are OK.

2001 mustang 4.6l 3 to 400 miles per month. 61000 miles. i just bought the car and id an oil change so i have not had any experience yet. i do like to hot rod the car a little bit since i only drive it mostly on the weekends. just trying to figure out what oil will be the best for me. thinking about Valvoline Synthetic. just wonder if i should use a different viscosity. 5w20 is what manufacturer recommends

5w-20 will be just fine then. ALL of them (Conventional and syns) are excellent oils and you will not notice a difference between them (except your pocket book)

PP is a great oil, if you're happy with it then stick with it. If you're curious, then try the 5w-20 next time and see if you (and the car) like it better.
I've never lived where the winters get that cold, but from what I understand a 5w-XX oil should work. Though if you wanted better cold flow properties in the winter then you'd have to look into a 0w-XX oil.
Also, since its a Ford and you say 5w-20 is recommended, I'd be foolish not to suggest Motorcraft semi-synthetic. It's shown itself to be a solid oil, at a great price, with very good cold flow properties. The oil is made for Ford so it should meet all Ford requirements (though it's a great oil that any car can use). And it should do 4k miles with ease, probably more but you might want to do a used oil analysis (UOA) to see how its holding up before extending your oil change intervals (OCI).

looking to only change oil every six months or so. the car will probly only see 10 to 12 thousand miles per year
If you like PP their 0W-20 is superior to their 5W-20 and any other 5W-20 out there.

I'd definitely use any name-brand synthetic 5w20 or 0w20 in the winter. The synthetics would also be great in the summer, but you could run Motorcraft or another good dino in the warmer months if you want to save some $.
