My 86 Toyota Corolla manual recommends 10W30 oil from 0F to 100 +F But this was in 86 and I am sure oil has gotten better. The manual also recommends 5W30 for 50F down. What I am wondering is can I use 5W30 all year around or should I stick with the book? Am considering running Royal Purple at this time.

5W30 sounds just fine year-round. Maybe try GC 0w30 or Esso XD-3 0w30 (available in Canada). The benefits of a 0W oil for cold-starts, with the characteristics of a 10w30 oil when hot and running.

Seriously though, pretty much any modern detergent 5w30 in that engine will do just fine. If it has survived this long without its owner caring much about specific brands/weights of oil, a different oil is unlikely to change things.

Esso and GC can not be found in my area. Also the engine is a new rebuild with less then 400 miles on it.

Spokane isn't far from the Canadian border though, so you could always drive across to buy these oils.

Hey I love that Pearl Jam song about Spokane! (Jeremy Spokane Class Today)

Yea Patman Castlegar and Grandforks are the two closest cities. Any of them got stores that carry this oil that you know of?

If they've got a Canadian Tire or a Walmart in those cities, then yes, you should have no problem finding GC.

Not all 5w30s are alike. You are probably OK with your Toyota, but I think Mobil 1 5w30 is too light for turbos, including those which can handle other 5w30 oils.

I would stick with the manual recommendation. My 92 camry 2.2L also says 5w30 for below 50F and 10w30 for above 0F. Since you want to use synthetic, I would wait until engine is broken in. 5w30 is probably fine year round if its synthetic. Most older recommendations in manual are probably based on conventional oils.
