What truck would you buy?

Ehhh Ram was and still is extremely questionable. All I've heard is endless transmission issues from the early 2000s on. I like everything about them except the reliability.

If anyone can show me good evidence that says otherwise, I'd be happy to look at Rams.

Evidence, no just testimony, I spend quite a bit of time in his rig working with him. He had 112K miles on his 08 Hemi Ram when he sold it. All he did aside from normal maintenance was replaced a tie rod. The transmission was flawless, but he did service it every 30K miles, that might have helped, and maybe by 08 the problems were resolved.

It pulled like a freight train. For an 08 in the shape his was the guy who paid $10K for it got a good deal.

My budget may be up to 2-3000 higher than that, but I'm expecting the worst at 10k.

A 1/2 ton will do it, but I'd want the bigger engine, transmission, and braking systems if I was going to regularly pull trailers up and down mountains.

Gas engine will likely be cheaper and easier to maintain, but diesel will likely struggle less while pulling that trailer on mountain roads. Take your pick, either will do the job.

Chevy/GMC or Dodge would be my choice.
x1000, I like the old 5.7L so much more than the 5.3L. The 5.3L doesn't have an ounce of low end power so you'll have it screaming like a VTEC Honda.

whatever you get you can also change out the gearing to help some with towing. It will certainly effect fuel economy (maybe even help around town) but it will also help alot in those hills.

Ford or GM Gas 3/4 to 1 ton would be my pick. The Ford V10 and Chevy 6.0 (or 8.3) would be the picks.

If you could find one for $10k (doubtful) an Ecboost F150 would be good as well (does great with our 9k camper) but I think at that price you're talking LOTS of miles.

Is there going to be much of a difference between a 3/4 and 1 ton gas truck with the same engine? Would the 1 ton have bigger brakes or better transmission cooling or anything?

I'm not sure about the older ones for for GM newer trucks the 1 tons get a bigger rear end (the same one the diesels get) vs the 3/4 ton. But that isn't really a big deal.

You may have to check but I recall that the 1 ton gas older ones sometimes were detuned compared to the 3/4 tons.

For $10,000.00 you will not get much. Used trucks are priced crazy right now.

Low gas prices causing that?

I would first look for a cummins 12 valve truck, then i would try to find a Powerstroke 7.3L truck, then i would look for a chevy gasser with a 6.0L

But honestly, 10k, isn't much for trucks anymore, so you will have to search really hard to find a good deal.

A mid level - half ton truck MSRP is close to $46,000.00. Yes, lower gas prices and new ones are expensive. My mid-level 2011-Silverado had a sticker price of $34,500.00. Transaction price was less than $26,000.00 (plus fees). New trucks sticker at $46,000.00 and the transaction price is $36,000.00 (plus fees). Yes, the new ones have more advanced electronics but they are still TEN GRAND MORE. Kelley Blue book says my depreciation has been about $6,000.00 in 5 years.

They can have VP44 injector pumps fail.

According to Autotrader original MSRP mid level:

2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 Crew Cab LT: $35,000
2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 Crew Cab LT: $41,965

Inflation calculator:
2011 $35,000 would be in today's dollars $37,380.

$4,585 difference and then really depends on the features of each trim.
