I found that 5w30 Pennzoil SUV syn blend is a bit on the thick side for me and I want to thin it a little on my next OCI.

Should I use Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Conventional, and which grade: 5W-20 or 5w30, for a 1 qt mix in a 4 qt sump. I plan on using it for a 4k OCI [short daily commute] in the northeast [Mar-Jun]. The following OCI will be straight PSuv for the summer.

Thx.

Why don't you just buy some thinner Penn SUV oil and use that?

Or if you insist on blending, at least using that oil would come closest to matching the ad pack of the thicker oil.

Not sure they make a thinner SUV oil. If I were going to do what you ask, I would pour in a quart of Pennzoil Conventional 5w20.

How cold is it where your at and what kind of vehicle are you using this in?

I have PSuv 5w30 in my stash and want to use it up. I've noticed a difference in mpg and engine response when using it straight in cooler/colder temps compared to Pennzoil Conventional; it's not the pour pt or 5W of PSuv. I'll mix a qt of Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 per Johnny on the next OC at the end of March and I'll give an update comparing mpg's on my CT-NC trip: Pennzoil Conventional CT-NC, PSuv 5w30+ 25% Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 NC-CT.

BTW: 3W-25 is a joke because of the ongoing posts with "the best oil grade" across the spectrum from 5w30 to 0W-20.

Pennzoil Conventional 5w20. I blend 5w20 and 5w30 routinely, either 1:1, or 2:1.
even when manual calls for 5w30, i run 5w25 routinely.

I didn't do the OC in the middle of the trip as originally planned so I don't have an mpg comparison to report. Running Pennzoil Conventional on the trip down to NC my best mpg was 29mpg and 31.9mpg coming back; I had more weight heading south, but had a slight head wind coming north thru PA. (Chev Malibu Maxx, 3.5 V6)

I will do the OC later this week with the mix and will give an update after I take my next trip.

Looking forward to your results. My mom has a 02 malibu and i have been putting M10w30 in it. Our family travels alot becuase we are all spread across the east coast. going to alabama (gulf shores) i got the same results you did. 29.3 as a low and 32mpg has a high. I changed her oil when she was at my house to syntec blend 10w30 (it was on sale) then drove to jacksonville NC(4hr trip) there and back. I did not notice any mpg difference. All numbers were within the same range.

Penn SUV 5w30 mpg update: Just finished a 760 mile drive to NC and got 34.4 (A/C off) on my last 257 miles to Charlotte (I-81/I-77) with Penn SUV in the Rav4 (not mixed as I previously considered); driving north in the Rav4 last month with Chevron Supreme I got 33 mpg (A/C on) from VA to NJ on I-81. I got as much as 32 mpg in my Malibu with Penn SUV. For me it is not bad stuff for the price; I paid $7 for a 6-pack last year. Both are nice an smooth even in the southeast temps.

I'm heading to FL and back to NC next week with more weight in the Rav4 than yesterday's drive & with the A/C on. I should hit 34 or even 35 with the A/C on and fairly flat interstate driving. I'll give everyone an update when I get back. FYI, I mix my gasoline 60% regular, 40% super.
