What thread is this zerk fitting?

I thought it was 1/4-28 but it's slightly tapered. This is off a galvanized dexter 5200 lb torsion axle. The little ball inside got pushed in permantly and is allowing water inside the hubs everytime I dunk the boat trailer in the water. This is turning into quite the mission to find this dude.

Zerk grease fittings come in both SAE and metric sizes. Have you checked for a metric Zerk fitting?
Must be what it is. The other issue is thus seems a bit short compared to what I see at the parts store. I have another pack of zerks laying around here somewhere that probably has the right size, but you can't ever fine stuff when you need it.

I can only remember seeing 1/4-28 on Moog stuff. I think Astro got right with 1/8 NPT. Take it to ACE hardware and match it.

Thread diameter is too big to be 1/8 NPT based on the thread vs head size in this photo. I vote 1/4-28 and you have a messed up thread on the trailer spindle. Check it with a tap. I went through our extensive inventory of zerks at work and unless there's a smaller metric option than we have here it has to be 1/4-28.

Edit: some of our 1/4-28 inventory is slightly tapered just like yours. Looks like it varies by mfg.

All the 1/8" ones ate twice the diameter as the one I have pictured. I cant find anything that's 1/4" taper it's all sae or 6mm metric

Thanks for looking. Guess I'm not nuts after all.

You could also just call Dexter
Yeah not a bad idea. I'm going to take one out of my other trailer and see what it looks like. If it's the same, I'll just swap it out. That little ball shouldn't matter on a trailer that doesn't get dunked in the water. Don't know why I didn't think of that earlier when I have 4 other dexter ez lube axles sitting right next to me. Awfully scatter brained these days

In the past dexter used 1/4 - 28. Don't let the taper at the start fool you. It is good machining practice in many cases to start threading on a chamfer or a taper. In this case I would use a drop of blue thread locker to help seal the threads.

Ite not tapered at the start. Look at the pic, the whole thing is tapered.

They are swapped out. Although I'm thinking now that I'm still going to need that little ball to be in there to keep the geaase from oozing out ever time the axle heats up. Good enough for now I guess. Dexter wants like $20 for these little zerks.

etrailer claims to have ones that says in the description, fits dexter ez lube axles and they're like $2/ea. This was just outrageous honestly. It's so sad that you can't just drive down the street anymore and buy something

The reason that I posted that link is just to show how many different thread types that there are. I was amazed! Some tapered, some not.
I think they give dimensions on that site so you might be able to figure out exactly what you have there.
