What Sealant To Use On Differential Drain Plugs?

Have used this for years if it needed it or not just for insurance.

I use Loctite 592.

i’ve always just sent them home the same way i removed them. no doubt a little pipe-dope would be beneficial.

My Tundra that I did recently had teflon tape on the transfer case plugs and gaskets (some crush some not) on the diff plugs. I just replicated what was done at the factory.

Planning a diff cover swap in a couple o' hunnert miles when my new ring-N-pinion sees 500 when it gets a gear lube change.

Thanks to this thread I have on the way some high-temp thread sealant for the new cover's fill plug, Ultra Grey RTV for the gasket and then Loc242 for the cover studs (3 of the 12 bolts) and stainless cap screws that mount the clips for the ABS line on this 8.8 Super axle in an 2016 F150.

Thanks fellers!

What sealant should I use for the threads of my differential fill and drain plugs?
Changing the fluid in my front Differential with 75W90 Gear Lube.
I use the yellow Teflon (Harvey 017065) that resists oil, gas, etc., and put a little Permatx PTFE thread sealer (80632) and torque to spec (in my case, it was 39 lb/ft), which is an NPT 1/2 14 pipe plug in the rear differential (seems like cast iron). Things to know: You have to put at least 4 layers of the yellow Teflon tape and a layer of the Permatex thread sealant (not too thick, not too thin, just a decent coating onto the yellow Teflon. This was the only combo that stopped my rear diff fill plug from seeping. I hope this helps!

A NPT thread plug is going to need sealant or thread tape at a minimum.. Most times, I just use yellow teflon tape made for gas line use.
