I just purchased a 99 dodge ram 5.2 v8 with 114k miles. I will be driving 2500 cross country tomorrow and was wondering what oil I should use. Pretty sure they dealership just put new oil and filter, but its most likely conventional and want to switch to full synthetic if it will help. If not i was leaning towards Pennzoil reg conv oil 5w30. Thanks

Why a purolator? Why not fram or k&n? I see this a lot are the cheaper oil filters better in some way? Also should I run a thicker oil, read some good reviews on the rotella oil which i believe is 10w40

Fram orange can filters are not well thought of in this forum due to the cardboard endcaps on the filter media and the nitrile anti-drainback device.

The K&N is a well constructed filter, but it's pricey.

The Purolator Classic filter is well constructed and inexpensive, ergo it's pretty popular.

check the rear on that before you go anywhere...the engines are good as long as you change your oil on time, dino would be a good choice for that engine

If you just got an oil change you should be fine. If it's killing you to change it go to AAP or AZ and grab one of their specials. If you live in the boonies and have to go to walmart or something pick up whatever "syn" floats your boat. They are all decent. Get the Xtended Guard filter if you care about filtration. XG's are one of the best filters on the market, and Walfart doesn't have a huge variety of filters, the other Fram filters are lousy.

The rear? You mean my diff? Only prob I have with my truck right now is the ruff shift from 1st-2nd and when I put it in reverse it make a jerk, prob the transmission mount im guessing.
