Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right forum section, but I’d like to know what type of oil should be used in the vibration case / exciter housing of a vibratory plate compactor.

There doesn’t seem to be any clear information online. Some people recommend transmission oil (Dexron III), others say 80W-90 gear oil, and some say 10W-30 engine oil.

I would also like to know the correct oil capacity as well.

I bought a VEVOR 196cc plate compactor, but the owner’s manual does not mention the exciter oil specification at all. I checked manuals from other manufacturers, but the information is very inconsistent and confusing.

I changed the oil and put in 100 ml of 80W-90 gear oil. I would like to know if that is acceptable or if I should switch to something else.

Very interesting!

Seems like a piece of equipment that is frequently rented. Suggest contact local equipment rental and see what they use. Probably not much difference between makes/models and those rental places live and die off repairs/PM.

(Obviously, also try to contact the manufacturer)

Shouldn't be much in there other than an eccentric shaft and a couple of roller bearings (or flat bushings). As long as there is oil in it, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot of what is in it. As long as it doesn't foam up and blow out the seal you'll be golden.

I'd run whatever I had laying around in the garage. Maybe avoid heavier gear oils since all that will do is cause increased drag on the motor and more fuel consumption.....but, oil, use some kind of oil.

I put gear oil in mine. Its fine either way. These machine literally beat themselves to death anyway.
