I have had some success with Pennzoil Platinum, you may want to give Pennzoil Ultra a try as it seems to have a little bit more cleaning additives than the PP.

sludge or Varnish?
Varnish does NOT hurt anything and 99% of engine will have some.
Best cleaning oil IMO is redline. Ultra would be a good bet also

+1. Auto RX is a great product that will remove the varnish. Even though its not harmful.

That doesn't make much sense as written. Just because an oil shows Ca, or Na in a used oil analysis does not mean it will clean sludge. Ultra? How do you have proof it cleans sludge?

i was not referring to sludge nor was op
anyways, op if you want to clean up your engine naturally, do short intervals of synthetic. some may say its a waste of money but it can clean it up.
here are my results of running 20k miles on synthetic:

I actually meant to type varnish.
Redline did a nice job with the very slight discoloration that I saw when looking through the oil fill hole on my '96 3.8L Ford Windstar.
I took the valve covers off for the first time a couple of weeks ago......and things look pretty good at over 220K miles

I wholeheartedly disagree with those that think varnish is benign. Varnish buildup:
- slows heat transfer to the oil causing the engine block, etc to run at higher temps
- narrows oil passages, causing reduced oil flow
both of these, over time, reduce engine life.
As far as cleaning up Varnish, motors oils are focused on preventing it by reducing oil oxidation, not cleaning it up after it has already occurred.
MMO and Rislone would be good products for cleaning it up, but I like MMO much better (ARX does nothing for varnish) - so stay with the 1 qt substitution of MMO per OCI you are doing and after an OCI or two (depending on how much you have), it will clean it up.
