I wholeheartedly disagree with those that think varnish is benign. Varnish buildup:
- slows heat transfer to the oil causing the engine block, etc to run at higher temps
- narrows oil passages, causing reduced oil flow
both of these, over time, reduce engine life.
As far as cleaning up Varnish, motors oils are focused on preventing it by reducing oil oxidation, not cleaning it up after it has already occurred.
MMO and Rislone would be good products for cleaning it up, but I like MMO much better (ARX does nothing for varnish) - so stay with the 1 qt substitution of MMO per OCI you are doing and after an OCI or two (depending on how much you have), it will clean it up.
