I bought a 2020 Jetta gli 2.0 tsi this evening. it calls for 0w20. Didn't this engine used to take thicker oil? Either way would you run 0w20? And what flavor? I plan on keeping it for at least 10 years and want to maintain it as best as I can . So fluid and filter recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!!

Use the factory owners manual specified oil. Which is VW 508.00 spec. I'm not sure if you are familiar with VW/Audi spec oils but you can essentially forget about the weight in this application. Just get an oil that has the 508.00 spec and you will be good to go. Personally I just pick up the factory oil / filter from the dealer.

VW508.00/509.00 is STRICTLY 0W20.

Use VW504.00/507.00 0W30 or 5W30.

My 2016 Jetta 1.8l came w Castrol Euro 5w40, doubt much changed in the block. If you are nervous run Euro 5w30 or 0/5w40 Euro. PP and M1 0w40 would be great oil or even PP Euro L 5w30. I'd personally do 5k oci due to keeping the rings in better shape to hopefully avoid stuck rings and oil consumption

Is it worth the extra money to run liqui moly, motul or amsoil?

What do you mean? I do kinda cringe at 0w20.... 🤷
This question on the ea888 gen 3s in the GTI and GLI has been covered many times here (search). You can run the 0w20/508...you can run the xw30/504...you can run the older xw40/502. If you are driving it normally bee-boppin' around town the 20 is fine. If you want more protection for higher stress use the 504 or 502. You won't hurt it.

I have a 2019 Passat with the 2.0 liter engine and have used VW 508 0W-20 oil since new. No issues. I do change it every 5000 miles. Use the right oil and enjoy the ride.

Right, I am well aware. I was just stating that all op needs to worry about is locating an oil with the 508.00 certification. I've just seen too many owners see "0w20" then go out and dump Pennzoil Platinum or similar in "because it takes 0w20". 508.00 and you are good.

Your Passat's 2.0 is not the same as the one in the GLI so keep that in mind.

The EA888 2.0 Gen3 in the GTI/GLI is a bit higher stress engine, and like anything else, probably benefits from increased HTHS. Formerly speced to run on 502.00 and only changes made when speced to 508.00 oil were lower tension piston rings and a higher volume (read: faster speed) oil pump to keep pressure up with thinner oil, which VAG did engine family-wide in 2018. Prevailing conspiracy theory is that the change to thinner oil was made to satisfy CAFE in US (I'm one of those that believes this too). OE branded oil is Mobil1 ESP X2 0W-20 and the slightly thicker ESP 0/5W-30 is 504.00. I use the 5W-30 in my Tiguan which has the lower power Budack 2.0. YMMV. Enjoy the controversy that ensues :).

No M1, QSFS, Castrol and PP euros are all fine. If you have the disposable income sure run whatever but not necessary
Motul/LM close to free through FCP though.....
